      HUGH WELCH DIAMOND (1809–1886)

      Est: €2,200 - €2,400

HUGH WELCH DIAMOND (1809–1886) | Roger Fenton, London 1857 | Photogalvanograph, printed in May 1857, on original cardboard 59,8 x 44 cm, image in perfect condition, mount with signs of wear 20 x 15,1 cm Typographic credit by the Photo-galvano-graphic Company Holloway with printing date and handwritten annotation “R. Fenton” in pencil on the mount The electro-engraving printing process invented in 1854 by Paul Pretsch was the beginning of a new era in the history of photography and printing, that of photo-engraving, which saw the publication of photographs in printing ink. Preparation of the plate took about six weeks from which 400-500 copies could be taken using a printing press. The Collotype by photo-galvano-graphic company Holloway shows Roger Fenton (1819–1869) trained as a painter and a lawyer before turning to photography in 1851. He was one of the founders of the Royal Photographic Society, and is best known for his extensive documentation of the Crimean War. Hugh Welch Diamond was a British psychiatrist and photographer who is considered a pioneer of psychiatric photography.
