Richard Rodgers Typed Letter Signed  " Dick." One page on his personal letterhead, 7.25" x 10.5"; New York; January 24, 1943. A letter to Harry Ruby, who he affectionately refers to as " Groin," with content relating to trouble he is having with the stars of his show, "By Jupiter." He writes: " La V. has been ‘sick,' nervous, and generally low in her performance. The end came a week ago when she told me that she could stay well and give good shows if she got a raise of ‘X' dollars!... I have reported the dame to Equity... Bill Hightower was dismissed from his gun-toting charge and has been out of the show with a knife wound in his arm, acquired in a fight with a soldier. Harry Levant is driving people gnutz but stays out of knife fights. The girl marines are known as leather-tits." This would be Rodgers' last show with Lorenz Hart. By this time, Hart's health had rapidly deteriorated due to his drug and alcohol use. Rodgers would begin collaborating with Oscar Hammerstein II. Condition: Smoothed mail folds. With two punch holes at top. The first three words in the third paragraph appear to be greyed out. HID01801242017

Richard Rodgers Typed Letter Signed  " Dick." One page on his personal letterhead, 7.25" x 10.5"; New York; December 26, 1942. A letter to " John," possibly Johnny Green of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, with great musical content. He writes: " 'Jupiter' had a kind of rocky pre-Christmas time of it but we expect very fine business from now on. Our leading lady, a nice looking girl in her twenties, was doing very well when last seen, a couple of days ago. Not much work left to do on the ‘Lilacs' score and I think you will like what we've done. I must admit I do. Casting is coming fine, but the Guild is a headache. What the hell is a producer? Something that doesn't know how to produce, Junior." "Jupiter" was "By Jupiter," the last show Rodgers wrote with Lorenz Hart. "Lilacs" was the original working title for "Oklahoma," his first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II. "Oklahoma" was a landmark show and premiered in 1943. The " Guild" was The Theatre Guild who produced "Oklahoma." Condition: Smoothed mail folds, with light crease at top. Two punch holes in top margin. Light scuff marks on verso. Paper clip indentation at top left corner. HID01801242017

Richard Rodgers Typed Letter Signed "Dick." One page on his personal letterhead

Richard Rodgers Typed Letter Signed  " Dick." One page on his personal letterhead, 7.25" x 10.5"; New York; March 17, 1944. A letter to Johnny Green, music director at Metro Goldwyn Mayer, giving heartfelt career advice to Green who was struggling between his roles as an executive and his love for composing. He writes: " As far as your future is concerned, it seems to me that making musical sound tracks for pictures doesn't offer the possibility for expansion in your career comparable with an executive job. That you would ever turn permanently away from music is incredible to me. [T] hink I can sum up my attitude now. Since there is no immediate demand that you make a decision one way or another, my suggestion would be to wait a bit and see how the wind blows. In a few months from now, you may find a seat behind a desk an extremely uncomfortable one or you may find more comfort than you have ever known standing in front of an orchestra. I should think there is no way for you to know until you try and as long as you don't close any doors behind you, I don't see how you can get into trouble." Green remained with Metro Goldwyn Mayer until the 1950s, but managed to also enjoy a career as a successful composer. He earned a total of 13 Oscar nominations as well as winning the award for the musical scores of "Easter Parade," "An American in Paris," "West Side Story," and "Oliver!" Condition: Smoothed mail folds, with a small stain in the left margin. Punch holes at top. Top left corner has been folded and there are three small tears through it. Pencil annotation in top left corner. HID01801242017
