SIR WILLIAM REID DICK (1878-1961) 'OUR LADY OF LIVERPOOL, QUEEN OF THE SEA', 1933 patinated plaster, signed and dated to the base REID DICK/ 1933 74cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick and by family descent Literature: Wardleworth D. William Reid Dick Sculptor, Routledge 2013, pp.128-129In 1929, Sir Edwin Lutyens was commissioned to design a grand Roman Catholic cathedral in Liverpool, intended to rival St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. His design featured an enormous structure with a 510-foot-high dome. Construction began in 1933 but was interrupted by World War II and later abandoned due to rising costs, leaving only the crypt completed. As part of the project, Lutyens commissioned the sculptor Sir William Reid Dick to create Our Lady of Liverpool, Queen of the Sea. He requested an eight-foot-high statue, stating, “Our Lady must be crowned and the sea must be represented.” After the Church authorities had reviewed the statue, Lutyens wrote to Sir William, “My dear Dick, your Madonna has been approved with acclamation.” The plaster reduction, with its distinctive maritime theme, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1933. Two casts were made—one was given to the Liverpool Roman Catholic Cathedral, and the other remained with the artist’s family, the current lot.

(BRITISH, 1879-1961): 'THE CHILD', BRONZE the kneeling mother holding aloft her baby, who rubs his eyes as if half asleep, raised on a rectangular base, signed 'Reid Dick ARA', green patination, 57cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. Catalogue Note: The marble version of 'The Child' is in the permanent collection of the Royal Academy, London, Object No. 03/1711. ‘The Child’ was the sculptor's Diploma work, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1929 after he was voted in as a Royal Academician. The painted Walter Sickert sent him a telegram of congratulations which read 'If a two dimensional may venture to address a three dimensional I think your diploma work one of the loveliest things I have ever seen. You are my exact idea of a sculptor'... Reid Dick depicts the mother in the style of the Virgin Mary, wearing a mantel and full gown falling to the ground; she raises her baby up as if he were the Christ Child to be worshipped. Once again the sculptor references earlier artistic themes, but modernises them through the stylised form of the figures, their almost blank faces, and the focus on outline and line rather than an overall visual effect. Related Literature: The marble version is illustrated in D. Wardleworth, 'William Reid Dick, Sculptor', p. 100.

SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A PLASTER MAQUETTE OF LADY GODIVA

    Est: £200 - £300

depicting the lady astride the horse, her hair in a plait falling down her shoulder, on a rectangular base,  20cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. Catalogue Note: The present maquette represents an important part of the history of British sculpture and the battle of artistic expression verses public opinion. It is an early version of the sculpture, and arguably a much stronger work than the final version, which the sculptor had to repeatedly alter to appease his patron,  Coventry town council committee, the press and the general public. The present study show the strong female figure riding nude with legs astride her horse, her breasts are fully visible and her hair is tied back in a simple plait. The horse is depicted in a stylised manner, with a strong, curved neck as though full of restrained energy.  Reid Dick's early versions of the figure, such as this example, caused a furore of criticism in Coventry. The novelist Dora Barford wrote 'Who is this thick-limbed and unskilled termagent with poverty stricken coiffure'...'where are the famous locks?'. After many years of letters going back and forth from the sculptor to his patron, Reid Dick changed the composition to depict the lady with long flowing hair covering much of her nudity, riding side saddle on a more naturalistically depicted horse. The result was arguably the watered down, weaker full size equestrian statue which remains at Broadgate, Coventy. SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): 'OUR LADY OF LIVERPOOL', PLASTER MAQUETTE

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

the standing figure wearing a crown and a long gown, holding a sphere in her left hand, a sea gull pecking at the sphere, the figure raised on a scallop shell, over a rectangular base with moulded wavy lines around the edges, signed 'Reid Dick 1933', painted to resemble bronze,  74cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. Catalogue Note: This stylised figure of the Virgin Mary is reminiscent of Gothic statues of the Virgin, with her static pose, crown, sphere and long full gown falling to her feet. Yet simultaneously, the sculptor rejects traditional notions of the Virgin;  she ignores the large sea gull that disturbs her, brushing her neck with its wing; she is raised on a shell, usually the attribute of the Roman goddess Venus, and the base is modelled with waves, again to represent the Port of Liverpool rather than a religious theme. This maquette was originally produced by Reid Dick for his full size figure which was to be part of the decorative scheme for a new Catholic cathedral in Liverpool designed by the renowned architect Edwin Lutyens. It was to be the largest project of Lutyen's career, the building was to have a huge dome which would be even larger that the dome at St Peter's, Rome. However, for financial reasons, the cathedral was never built, and it is not known if the full size statue was ever made.  The statue was titled 'Our Lady of Liverpool, Queen of the Sea' and Lutyens asked Reid Dick to produce a model about a quarter of the size of the original, which was to be eight foot high, he stated 'Our Lady must be crowned and the sea must be represented'. Having received a model (presumably not the present version which was still in the sculptor's personal collection); Lutyens wrote 'My dear Dick, your madonna has been approved with acclamation'. A model was shown at the Royal Academy in 1933, possibly the present model as the other had been sent to Lutyens.  Related Literature:  D. Wardleworth, 'William Reid Dick, Sculptor', p. 128.

SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): 'THE CHILD', BRONZE

    Est: £12,000 - £18,000

the kneeling mother holding aloft her baby, who rubs his eyes as if half asleep, raised on a rectangular base, signed 'Reid Dick ARA', green patination,  57cm high Provenance:  Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. 100.

    Mar. 16, 2022

SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A BRONZE GROUP 'MOTHER AND CHILD'

    Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Catalogue Note: Unlike the sculptor's other work 'The Child', here there is no reference to the Virgin and Child; instead we have a much more playful and emotional composition, arguably much close to life; a very personal moment and emotional bond captured in time.

  • SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF 'SLING BOY'
    Mar. 16, 2022

SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF 'SLING BOY'

    Est: £6,000 - £8,000

depicting a nude boy aiming his catapult, on a naturalistic base, dark brown patination, signed 'W. Reid Dick', later mounted on an ebonised base, the bronze 36.3cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. Catalogue Note: Also known as 'The Slingshot' and 'The Catapult', Reid Dick first exhibited his bronze of the Sling Boy at the Royal Academy in 1911. This example was 60cm high and is now in the Bradford City Art Gallery, Cartwright Hall. A further example at 63cm high was sold at Bonhams, London, 4 November 2015, lot 297; and like our example, it came direct from the sculptor's family and realised £26,000 hammer.  The present bronze is also a rare cast, measuring just over 36cm high; the vast majority of the casts measure 33cm high. Considering the exceptional provenance, it is likely that Reid Dick had the present bronze cast for his own personal collection or as a prototype before agreeing to the edition of bronzes cast by Giovanni Galizia at 33cm high, that appear on the auction market much more regularly.  Related literature: D. • SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A BRONZE BUST OF ANN, POSSIBLY A UNIQUE CAST
    Mar. 16, 2022

SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A BRONZE BUST OF ANN, POSSIBLY A UNIQUE CAST

    Est: £1,500 - £2,000

depicting the sculptor's daughter, Ann, as a small child, with a pensive look, dark patination with greenish tones, signed to the reverse 'Reid Dick ARA 1927 / ANN' 25.5cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. Catalogue Note: This bronze is, as far as we can ascertain, the same bronze bust of Ann that was exhibited by the sculptor at The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts Sixty-Sixth Annual Exhibition, 1927, and at The Exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, The One-Hundred-and-First,  also in 1927. In the same family collection remains a marble bust of Ann of near identical form, also dated 1927. This sensitive depiction of the sculptor's own child, with a slightly fearful look in her eye and her mouth open as if about to speak; gives the viewer the impression that the bust has captured a moment in time rather than a generalised portrait of the child. The childish soft hair is represented with a minimum of detail and a sparsity of line, in a much more modern style than the sculptor's predecessors of the late 19th century. • SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A LIFE SIZE PLASTER BUST OF LADY DICK, DATED 1924
    Mar. 16, 2022

SIR WILLIAM REID DICK R.A. (BRITISH, 1879-1961): A LIFE SIZE PLASTER BUST OF LADY DICK, DATED 1924

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

the elegant female bust with head turned to sinistre, her bust emanating from the abstract, bulbous base, the back similarly modelled with bulbous forms, the whole painted to resemble terracotta, the reverse inscribed 'To my wife, Reid Dick 1924',  75cm high Provenance: Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter Ann Benton and thence by descent to her children. Catalogue Note: The unusual form of this striking bust demonstrates the sculptor's departure from traditional portraiture and his exploration of more modernist themes. His apparent focus on the surface and the material of the clay, which would then have been used to cast this plaster version indicate that he was just as interested in the process of production and surface treaetment as he was the final outcome and resemblance to the sitter. The strange, almost cloudlike forms bubbling at the base of the bust seem to have a life of their own and contrast with the linear form of Lady Dick's long neck and poised, static pose.  We can find no record of the bust being exhibited or any other versions sold at auction and can only therefore assume that it was produced as a unique, personal gift to his wife as the inscription suggests.
