It has been pointed out that the planet Pluto was discovered the same year as this print was published.     William Dickerson (1904-1972) New Mexico Afternoon Mid 20th Century The very unusual oil on canvas by this member of the Prairie Print Makers, known primarily for his prints and watercolors, is signed lower right front and titled verso. William Dickerson and his wife had a strong connection to Taos and Santa Fe and the surrounding regions of New Mexico. His initial visit in 1931 was a wedding gift from Ed Davison, a Wichita banker and art patron. This trip sparked a lifelong affinity for the Southwestern landscape resulting in regular visits. Oil paintings by Dickerson are rare. This Modernist composition boasts another unusual feature. Figures are not often seen in works by William Dickerson. There is also an interesting working sketch back side of the canvas, and frame is a very nice custom example. Canvas measures 20.25 x 26 with a framed size of 26.75 x 32.5 inches.     Titled 'A Picket Fence' lower left and signed lower right with the number 31, presumably for the year of its creation, 1931. Very early in the American Regionalist Art Movement of the 1930s, William Dickerson of Wichita Kansas was busy creating works like this in Kansas while others were doing so in New York. Dickerson was a founding member of the Prairie Print Makers and director of the Wichita Art Association for 41 years. This work measures 7 x 9 inches.
