      Edward Montgomery O'Rorke Dickey HRUA HRCA CBE (1894-1977) The Farm Gate Pen, ink and monochrome wash, 20.5 x 27cm (8 x 10.5'') Signed Born in Belfast, Dickey studied painting under Harold Gilman at the Westminster School of Art. He exhibited widely in Ireland during the early 1920's, including at the first exhibition of the Society of Dublin Painters along with Paul Henry, Lititia Hamilton and Jack B Yeats.

      Attributed to Edward Montgomery O'Rorke Dickey HRUA HRCA CBE (1894-1977) Walker's Pillar, Derry, c.1920-25 Oil on canvas, 46 x 30cm (18 x 12'') Exhibited: Harbour Museum, Derry, May - October 2005, on loan from the previous owner Dickey is known to have often painted views of towns from an elevated position, such as that afforded by the old city walls of Derry in this work. In the foreground is Walker's Pillar, an eighty foot high Doric column erected in 1826 as a memorial to George Walker (1618-1690), Irish Anglican clergyman and commander. Walker served as joint governor of Londonderry (now Derry) during the 1689 siege by the army of the deposed James II. Under Walker's leadership, the townfolk held the city for 105 days until help arrived. Walker received the tanks of Parliament and was designated Bishop of Derry. The pillar was destroyed by a bomb blast in the early 1970's

      Edward Montgomery O'Rorke Dickey CBE HRUA HRCA (1894-1977) LOUGHISLANDREAVY, COUNTY DOWN, 1921 signed lower right; inscribed and dated on reverse oil on canvas 41 by 51cm., 16 by 20in. Provenance: Rodney Baker Antiques, Co. Armagh; Whence purchased by Dr McKee in 2000 Dickey lived in Antrim for a short while after World War I and painted landscapes there and in Counties Down and Donegal. At the time he was one of only a tiny minority of artists working in Northern Ireland who might be considered part of the wider European avant-garde. The present landscape, from this post-war period, depicts the Mourne Mountains in the distance. Dickey was the son of a Belfast solicitor and studied at the Westminster School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, as well as with the London Group, the New English Art Club and Leicester Galleries. Two paintings of his are in the collection of the Ulster Museum. Signed by the artist on the limitation page. Published by Duckworth and Co., London, 1923. Review copy, with a stamp on title-page announcing the publication date of 26 April 1923. Also with a 1977 newspaper clipping laid in, detailing the career of the poet, Richard Rowley, who was a Belfast linen maker born Richard Valentine Williams.

Kennedy, Belfast, April 2005, concerning O'Rorke Dickey's probable authorship of the painting, and dating it to the early 1920s.
