      Both Ovals: One of Abraham Schermerhorn in high collared coat, attributed to Anson Dickinson (1779-1852), with paperwork on sitter and Walter L. Suydam on paper tag, SS: 2 5/8" x 2 1/8"; and Miniature of young man in oval frame, SS: 2 1/2" x 2". Abraham Schermerhorn (1783-1850), wealthy NYC merchant, married Helen Van Cortlandt White , had 9 children, one of whom, Caroline, married William Astor. Lived at No. 1 Greenwich Street until about 1840, No 36 Bond Street thereafter. Walter Leonard Suydam was a prominent member of NYC Socety in the Gilded Age. His maternal grandfather was Abraham Schermerhorn.

      Anson Dickinson (American, 1779-1852) Miniature Portrait of Raphael Dickinson, 1831. Unsigned. Watercolor, 2 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. (sight), in a mitred and molded mahogany frame. Condition: Good. Note: Mona Dearborn, an authority on Dickinson's work, wrote in a 1993 letter about this miniaiture: "there is no question about the identity of the sitter or the artist." Ms. Dearborn explains also that this miniature was probably painted in New Haven on August 20, 1831.

      ANSON DICKINSON (AMERICAN 1779-1852). PAIR OF PORTRAIT MINIATURES OF FREDERICK WOLCOTT AND HIS DAUGHTER, MARIANNE WOLCOTT WHITEHEAD, OF LITCHFIELD, CONNECTICUT. Each watercolor on ivory, 3 x 2 1/2 inches, sight.Frederic (1767-1837) was the son of Oliver Wolcott, a member of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Governor of the state of Connecticut. Frederick's sister, Mariann, is noted for making the most bullets from the statue of King George III, removed from Bowling Green and melted down in Litchfield. She was also the subject of a portrait by Ralph Earl. Frederick was a Clerk of the Superior Court, Litchfield County and a member of the State Assembly. Marianne (1803-1864) attended Litchfield Female Academy, and married Asa Whitehead of Newark, New Jersey in 1827.

      Miniature Portrait of William Hull. Unsigned. The sitter's name inscribed on a piece of paper inserted in the case. Watercolor on ivory, c. 1810, bust-length portrait of a young man with curly brown hair and brown eyes wearing a black jacket, white shirt and stock, with a shaded cloud-like background, 2 5/8 x 2 1/8 in., in an oval copper case with a compartment on the reverse containing a lock of plaited brown hair. Condition: Very good.
