Lot Essay In addition to his large body of premier coup landscapes (landscape paintings executed on-site, in “one strike”), the enigmatic American artist Edwin Dickinson was also an accomplished figurative painter. Judith was painted in mid- September, 1937, in Provincetown, where the artist maintained a long-term residence from 1913-1940. In this engaging work, which has a venerable exhibition history, the subject is seated in an interior and gazes blankly at the viewer; it is largely her open left eye of which we are aware, as her right eye, and her other facial features, are alluded to, but essentially blurred, and thus not specifically depicted, all to great emotive and expressive effect. Indeed, Mary Ellen Abell speaks of a ‘detachment’ from his subject which Dickinson experienced. Said the artist, “I very well recall...as early as 1915 I had come to the point where I could so lose track of what was the object I was doing that...after an hour straight of concentration, I was surprised to look up and see that there was a person beyond the canvas.” Dickinson sought out the elimination of detail to most accurately capture his subjects. The American artist Elaine de Kooning noted that Dickinson would literally squint when painting, and in so doing, renders his subjects “in terms of mobile, dissolving planes.” De Kooning further cited Dickinson’s influence on a later generation of Abstract Expressionists, since Dickinson was a “painter’s painter” who looked inward, rather than outward, and emphasized “method not theory” as a guidepost for his work. The result, such as with Judith, are paintings that leave the viewer with more of a sense of mystery than of clarity. Indeed, while Dickinson studied with Charles Hawthorne and William Merritt Chase, it is noteworthy that his landscapes have been said to show influences of artists Paul Cézanne, John Constable, and Albert Pinkham Ryder. Perhaps it is not surprising that as a longtime teacher–including in New York City, Boston, Buffalo, and Provincetown– Dickinson stressed the importance of individual critiques over rigorous doctrines in an effort to help students determine if they had achieved a “rightness” in their painting. Approaching painting without rigid doctrines may shed light on why Judith appears to us almost more as an apparition than a fully formed figure. “All of his devices–unusual poses, “unnameable color,” “interstices,” “angular” perspective, unusual angles–were about setting aside one’s preconceptions and learning to look meticulously at something as if one were encountering it "for the first time....” The goal was to complete a more honest likeness or more authentic kind of work that was fresh and original.

Known as a "painter's painter," Dickinson has long been celebrated by fellow artists and befriended the likes of Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Esther Hoyt Sawyer, and Jack Tworkov. Perhaps most well-known for his psychological self-portraits, Dickinson also veered into landscapes, both imagined and real. In 1939, the artist moved to Wellfleet, Massachusetts, where he soon constructed his own studio and started a period of great artistic output from between 1940 and 1943. It was during this time that Stone Tower was created. Although Dickinson regularly used the technique of premier coup, or first strike, for his summer landscapes, he abandons premier coup in Stone Tower. The painting fits naturally into Dickinson's shadowed and sometimes eerie worlds. To create the imposing tower, Dickinson used, in his own words, a "violent angular perspective above the eye." This unusual angle of the tower is indicative of Dickinson's love of and his experimentation with perspective. The tower itself is imagined, and Dickinson chose to craft it using various shades of lilac, reportedly his favorite color.

Notes: This painting was exhibited in important American galleries throughout it's existence including Tibor De Nagy Galleries, New York, Graham Galleries, New York, and Robert Henry Adams Gallery in Chicago, Il. Signed and dated front with several gallery labels verso. Provenance: Robert Henry Adams Gallery collection (label verso), Tibor De Nagy Gallery (label verso), Graham Gallery (2 labels verso). About the artist: Edwin Walter Dickinson (Massachusetts/New York/California 1891-1978) was an early American modernist painter and draftsman. Dickinson was born and raised in the Finger Lakes region of New York. During his formative years Dickinson endured many tragic events including the death of his mother from tuberculosis in 1903, his older brothers suicide in 1913, his fathers remarriage in 1914 to a much younger woman, and the death of a close friend. These tragedies all became influences on Dickinsons work later in life. Dickinson failed two entrance exams for the US Naval Academy and consequently enrolled at the Art Students League in New York City where he studied with William Merritt Chase. In the summers of 1912 and 1913 Dickinson stayed in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he met and studied with Charles W. Hawthorne. Dickinson took up residency in Provincetown from the summer 1913 to the summer of 1916, working as Hawthornes assistant in 1914. Hawthorne had a great influence on Dickinsons work throughout his life. As a teacher Hawthorne had his students use palette knives and their fingers to paint as if painting had been just invented. Hawthorne inspired Dickinson to paint without formulas and to look for the unexpected. Hawthornes ideas were avant-garde and are considered by some to be the precursors to the abstract expressionist movement that would not occur until 20 years after Hawthornes death.Working during the modernist era, Dickinson deviated from the norm in his paintings styles and genres. Dickinsons paintings were often dark, dreamlike, and almost surrealist in nature. Many of his paintings were obsessively reworked again and again, yet other works were painted en plein air and at the moment. These later paintings were often small in scale, semi-abstract in style, using soft and spontaneous light to convey their ideas. According to the consignor, this work appears to be a tribute and farewell to Dickinson''s best friend, Herbert Groesbeck, Jr., who died ten days prior to the end of WWI. The back of the work also bears Groesbeck''s name. We believe Dickinson overlaid his canvas on an abstract his friend painted before his death, and that Groesbeck''s identification, as well as Dickinson''s initials, are on the back of Groesbeck''s canvas.
