According to the ancient legend Clytemnestra stabbed her husband Agamemnon to death in the bath to punish him for sacrificing their daughter to the gods. The work shows a grim scene – the naked figure of Clytemnestra in a bilious green environment. The background contrasts with the vibrant red colour, a symbol of Clytemnestra’s bloody deed, which runs across the canvas. The work is in very good condition with only a few minor colour abrasions. The canvas is signed “Volker Dierkes”, dated “2006” and titled “Das Bad der Klytemnästra” (“Clytemnestra’s Bath”) on the back. The dimensions are 150 x 150 cm. Volker Dierkes (b. 1942) Volker Dierkes was born in Colmar, Alsace in 1942. He studied fine art in Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Berlin. For twenty years he lived and worked in Spain and Germany.
