According to the ancient legend Clytemnestra stabbed her husband Agamemnon to death in the bath to punish him for sacrificing their daughter to the gods. The work shows a grim scene – the naked figure of Clytemnestra in a bilious green environment. The background contrasts with the vibrant red colour, a symbol of Clytemnestra’s bloody deed, which runs across the canvas. The work is in very good condition with only a few minor colour abrasions. The canvas is signed “Volker Dierkes”, dated “2006” and titled “Das Bad der Klytemnästra” (“Clytemnestra’s Bath”) on the back. The dimensions are 150 x 150 cm.
