Protetto da John Granville, conte di Bath, per lui dipinse diverse vedute e paesaggi ideali di gusto italianizzante. A documentare la fortuna collezionistica delle sue creazioni sono le fonti storiche e Horace Walpole afferma che Sir Peter Lely possedeva ben sette quadri dell'artista. \“Le battaglie navali costituivano, entro il genere della 'marina', uno dei soggetti più diffusi e richiesti nell'ambito della pittura olandese della seconda metà del Seicento, epoca, questa, storicamente travagliata per l'Europa intera e costellata di innumerevoli episodi bellici che avevano offerto un ricco materiale iconografico per la pittura.
