Date: c. 1822 Description: The artwork illustrates a satirical scene in which a lady in a lavish gown is lifted up by a gas explosion. A terrified child lies on the ground and furnishings whirl through the air. The composition is humorous and socially critical, spanning a dynamic arc between elegance and technological danger. The title at the top and the explanatory text at the bottom frame the depiction and emphasise its commentary function. Richard Dighton, British 1795-1880- The Squire of Hertford; pencil and watercolour on two sheets of paper, joined, signed and inscribed 'Richd Dighton [?] / 2 Sloane St. / Knightsbridge / London' verso, inscribed 'The "Squire" of Hertford.' (lower edge), bears 'Bristol Board' blindstamp (lower left), 30.7 x 21.8 cm. Provenance: The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson. Note: Dighton was the son of the caricaturist Robert Dighton (1752-1814), and his early works, in particular, reveal the influence of his father. These works are often seen as pre-cursors to the 'Vanity Fair' illustrations which were produced towards the end of the 19th century. Later in his career, however, Dighton's work signal a move away from caricature towards more formal and less exaggerated portraiture. The present work is characteristic of Dighton's portraits of well-dressed and evidently wealthy figures, although the exact identity of this 'Squire of Hertford' is not clear.

Dighton (Richard, printmaker, publisher, and son of Robert Dighton the Elder, 1795-1880) A collection of 97 caricatures, including 'The Dandy Club' [BM Satires 13031], Queen Caroline of Brunswick, Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa, Duchess of Cambridge ('An illustrious consort'), and many other semi-caricature portraits in profile, including some presumably from 'Characters at the West End of the Town' and others of contemporary legal professionals, racing and hunting personalities, etchings on various papers, all but a handful with hand-colouring, sheets between 240 x 140 mm.
