Laddie John Dill Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1943 -

Laddie John Dill was born and reared in Los Angeles, California, where he attended Santa Monica High School and graduated from the Chouinard Art Institute in 1968. At that time he formed a small framing business “Acme Framing Company”. He furthered his education through an apprenticeship and thereby made contacts with established artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Robeert Smithson, Dennis Oppenheim and other contemporaries. Dialogue with these and other artists in the 1970s opened Dill to experiments with many different materials and media that included neon as well as earth materials as alternatives to easel painting. As a result he began working three dimensionally with large amounts of silica sand and cement mixed with natural pigments as well as incorporating light in his works. His works involves carving as well as spontaneous mixtures of media in spontaneous broad gestures in what he claims to be “16 different processes …” Laddie John Dill has a record of exhibitions in many exhibitions and galleries including venues in Seoul, Paris, Nogoya, Helsinki, Finland, New York, Kansas City and throughout California. Dill's works are owned by more than twenty-five museums.

In 1971, Dill had his first one-man exhibit at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York.Through experimentation his work took on a fresh format bounded by straight lines with the addition of architectonic shapes. In 1975, the format was vertical, suggesting "a figurative reference achieved by a more formal architectural structuring." Two years later he was working on a vertical "Door" series.Later paintings fused both landscape and architectural imagery. Dill was working with cement polymer, glass, silicone and oil on canvas. He has also made drawings in pastel, oil and graphite on rag paper. In addition to carving cement, Dill filled a room in his studio with 10,000 pounds of silica sand, using brooms and shovels to move it around in the creation of his version of an art work.
