Ditscheiner 1902' Broad ornamental frame Dimensions: 84.5 x 63 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Austria Romantic wooden landscape with ruin in the fine manner of Adolf Ditscheiner; works by the painter fetch over €12,000 on the international auction market Adolf Ditscheiner created this work in 1902. Here the Viennese painter captured the Roman Ruin at the foot of the wooded slopes of Schönbrunn Hill. The artificial ruin, built in 1778, was designed by the court architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg after the ancient Temple of Vespasian and Titus in the Roman Forum. The present work shows Ditscheiner's talent as a colorist, whose interest lay not with faithful depiction of his subject matter but rather with the evocation of a certain mood which should enthrall the viewer. With skillfully placed light and color accentuations, the painter captured the mystical aura of the abandoned ruins and created a composition of great picturesque charm. The painting is signed and dated lower left 'Ad. Ditscheiner 1902'. It is in good condition. There is slight craquelure. In the lower right area there is a small restoration backed with a patch of canvas on the verso and retouched in the front. There are two small retouchings to the left edge. The frame is a little chipped. The framed work measures 106 x 83.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 84.5 x 63 cm. Gustav Adolf Ditscheiner (1846-1904) Adolf Ditscheiner was born in Vienna in 1846. From 1866 to 1873 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts and was a pupil of Albert Zimmermann. He continued his studies on travels through the Bavarian mountains and Northern Italy as well as during a stay in Istria and on the Adriatic Sea. Ditscheiner's oeuvre includes mainly landscapes, finding his motifs around Vienna, Salzburg and in Upper Austria. The painter received awards at the universal exhibitions in Vienna in 1873 and in Chicago in 1893. In 1899 he was honored with a State Medal.
