On the verso a curious scene with a nude woman reading a book by candlelight, accompanied by a devil and a skull. - Joined: 1. Letter D. 20th c. Woodblock, 6,1 x 5,3 x 2,4 cm. - 2. Clock with "The Fortunes of Nigel". 19th c. Woodblock, 6,8 x 7,7 x 2,2 cm. Probably an illustration for an edition of Walter Scott's novel. (3 pcs)

        John A. Dix ALS Regarding a Theorized Promotion to Colonel 2pp, measuring 5.25" x 8", Fort Monroe, dated October 22, 1862. Signed "John A. Dix/Maj Gen" and addressed to Major General Keyes at Yorktown. Written on U.S. Military Telegraph letterhead, the letter concerns the possible promotion of a cavalryman. Flattened mail folds with small separations starting at the edges. Scattered toning and soiling. Boldly signed. Reading in full: "Before I received your note in regard to Col. Hall - Col. Stetsel of the 11th Penn Cavalry was spoken to in regard to the Colonelcy of the 5th. He was here today. He is a most excellent officer has been in the Army and has seen a good deal of cavalry services. As Col. Hall would not gain in rank I suppose he would be indifferent about a change in position."  John A. Dix (1798-1879) served as a Union general during the Civil War and is well known for having played a key role in suppressing the New York Draft Riots of 1863. He served for a brief period as Secretary of the Treasury under President Buchanan before Lincoln was inaugurated, and after the war became U.S. Minister to France and later Governor of New York.
