Samuel Dixon (fl.1748-1769) BIRDS AND FLOWERS coloured basso relievo h:10  w:13.50 in. "Samuel Dixon was the son of Thomas Dixon, hosier, Cork Hill, and brother of John Dixon, the engraver. As early as 1748 he was established as a picture dealer and painter in Capel-street, at the house formerly occupied by Dr. Sheridan, grandfather of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, where he sold 'Flower-pieces, drawings in Indian ink, landscapes in oyl for chimneys, and small ditto done on vellum in water-colour fit for ladies' closets.' Dixon became noted for his flower and bird pieces in basso-relievo. The designs for these were impressed on sheets of coarse grey paper, by copper plates from the back, so that the design stood out in relief. They were afterwards coloured by hand. Dixon employed several young men, who lived in his house, to colour these designs; amongst them being James Reily and Gustavus Hamilton, afterwards well-known miniature painters in Dubli. These flower and bird pieces, which were very popular, are now rarely met with." - Walter G. Strickland 'A Dictionary of Irish Artists', Dublin, 1913

Attributed to Samuel Dixon (Irish, fl.1748-1769) A pair of George II basso-relievo gouache still life of moths and foliage basso-relievo gouache oval, in rectangular gilt frames (2) h:26 w: 32 cm During the mid-18th century, Irish artist Samuel Dixon invented and popularised a new painting technique known as basso relievo, most notably used to embellish paintings of natural history subjects, especially birds and flowers. This technique used a copper plate to emboss certain areas of a picture, which was then painted with watercolours and highlighted with gouache to achieve a three-dimensional effect. The moths are: Lunar Underwing, Black Arches, Anania Funebris, Willowherb Hawk Moth, Scarce Burnished Brass, Peach Blossom, Speckled Yellow, Puss Moth, Argent and Sable, Cinnabar, Barred Yellow, Buff Arches, Common Heath, Goat Moth, Green Silverlines, Leopard Moth, Gold Spot, Wood Tiger, Yponomeuta Irrorella. We are grateful to Ian Kimber for his help in identifying the moths.
