Otto Djaya depicts a laid-back neighbourhood scene, where neighbours casually greet each other in the street, taking their time to interact with one another — a far cry from the present. A path flanked by trees leads to a bungalow / mansion at the end; where kebaya-wearing ladies are heading back home. As the artwork title suggests, the lady is reminding the guys of the promises they have made.Born in Rangkasbitung in West Java in 1916, Djaya learned Art at the Indonesian Painters Union (Persagi) atelier, headed by his elder brother Agus (1913-1994). A soldier with the rank of ‘Major’, he was injured in the fight for Indonesian independence. Together with Agus, he studied at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam in 1947-50, and his works were accepted at the Grand Prix de Peinture de Monaco in Monte Carlo. He also took part in the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil. His first solo was in 1978 in Jakarta but he was largely forgotten until the retrospective, 100 Years Of Otto Djaya, at the Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta in September-October 2016, culled from the collection of Hans Peter and Inge-Marie Holst, who are now based in Kuala Lumpur.

Add sketching the village damsel to small-town ‘entertainment’ as the gaggle of curious admirers obviously attests. It’s also an opportunity for the testosterone-charged male to ogle at the pretty sitter, which they otherwise wouldn’t even dare glance at. There is an obvious sneering look of jealousy in the maiden near the tree looking on, while another is walking nearer to see what the fuss is all about. Otto Djaya (nee Otto Djajasuntara), in his simplistic renditions, had always injected a dose of humour into his paintings of everyday situations, particularly in the villages.Born in Rangkasbitung in West Java in 1916, Djaya learned Art at the Indonesian Painters Union (Persagi) atelier, headed by his elder brother Agus (1913-1994). Est: RM3,000 - RM5,000

The Kuda Kepang dance ritual is obviously a favourite among Indonesian artists. In this Henry Butcher Art auction, two selections by Otto Djaya and Rudy Mardijanto deal with the theme. It uses a horse made up of wooden-bamboo decorated with cloth, paint, beads and sequins while others are of hide or pleated rattan. Originating in Java and later popular in Johor, it was formerly a trance dance like the Sanghyang dance. When possessed, the dancers could perform feats like eating glass. Although Otto Djaya, full-name Otto Djajasuntara, was known in Indonesian art circles, the full scale of his contributions became known in his belated Retrospective titled, 100 Years of Otto Djaya, at the Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta in September-October 2016. Some 172 works displayed were loaned from the niche collection of Hans Peter and Inge-Marie Holst, who are now based in Kuala Lumpur. Born in Rangkasbitung in West Java in 1916, Djaya learned Art at the Persagi atelier, headed by his elder brother Agus (1913-1994). A soldier with the rank of ‘Major,’ he was injured in the fight for Indonesian independence. Together with Agus, he studied at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam in 1947-50, and his works were accepted at the Grand Prix de Peinture de Monaco in Monte Carlo. He also took part in the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil. He had not looked back since his first solo in Jakarta in 1978. He made his debut in the Henry Butcher May 29, 2015 auction.

The pair of dancers takes centrestage, flanked by the gamelan musicians on the right, and the spectators on the left. The comparatively obscure artist, Otto Djaya, was given a belated Retrospective by the Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta in October this year. Kuala Lumpur-based Danish art curator Inge-Marie Holst who with her husband Hans Peter Holst collected lot of Otto’s works, 172 of which were shown in the retrospective, was reported to have said: “Otto had a colourful and humorous style… He was often critical of the government during times when it was difficult to be so, when people went to prison for speaking their mind.”Born in Rangkasbitung, Bantung, Otto learned painting at the Persagi atelier, headed by his elder brother Agus. He was trained as a soldier with the ranking of ‘Major’ and was injured in the fight for Independence. He studied at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam in 1947-50 together with Agus, and was accepted to the Grand Prix de Peinture de Monaco in Monte Carlo and the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil.

        Mar. 29, 2015

        OTTO DJAYA (b. 1916 - d. 2002), Tari Pencak,1998, oil on canvas

        Est: RM3,000 - RM5,000

Appearing at HBArt auction for the first time, Otto Djaya - one of Indonesia's most accomplished modern masters - depicts the traditional dance in a vibrant and energetic manner capturing the enthusiasm of the performers and the musicians. The artist was known for his depictions of traditional dances and ordinary lives in Indonesia. Tari Pencak (Pencak Dance) is a form of martial arts performance deriving from pencak silat, performed in addition to instrumental music. Although the word silat is widely known throughout Southeast Asia, the term pencak silat is specifically used in Indonesia. Pencak silat was selected in 1948 as a unifying term for the Indonesian fighting styles. It was a compound of the two most commonly used words for martial arts in Indonesia. Pencak is a term used in central and east Java, while silat is used in Sumatra and Borneo. In modern usage, pencak and silat are seen as being two aspects of the same practice. Pencak is the performance aspects of the martial art, while silat is the essence of the fighting and self-defence. It is often said by practitioners that there can be no silat without pencak, on the other hand pencak without silat skills is purposeless. Otto Djajasuntara is the brother of Indonesian accomplished painter Agus Djaya (1913-1994). The siblings were members of Persatuan Ahli-Ahli Gambar Indonesia (Persagi) in 1937. During the Japanese Occupation, Otto worked at Pusat Kebudayaan (Keimin Bunka Shidoso). Upon the proclamation of independence in 1947, both siblings entered Rijks Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam and were enrolled in a course at Fakulteit Latteren en Wijsbegeerte Universiteit van Amsterdam and returned to Indonesia 3 years later. He held his first solo exhibition in 1978 at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) Jakarta. REFERENCE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencak_Silat
