        JUN DOBASHI Untitled. Gouache, watercolor and crayon on paper, circa 1960. 160x152 mm; 6½x6 inches. Signed in white gouache, lower right recto. Provenance: Private collection, Chicago. Born in Japan, Dobashi (1910-1975) studied art in Tokyo before visiting Paris for the first time in 1938. It was to become the beginning of a long connection with the city, and would lead to him to living in Paris permanently from 1953 to 1969. Having been a member of the influential Shinjuki group in Japan, Dobashi had his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1954, and went on to exhibit regularly at Galerie Fricker. He also exhibited at the leading avant-garde salons such as the Salons d'Automne, Salon de Mai (1956, 1957, 1958, 1960); Salon des Comparaisons (1960); and in 1958, he was invited to show at the prestigious École de Paris exhibition at Galerie Charpentier, Paris. Dobashi went on to establish an international reputation, exhibiting in numerous group shows throughout Europe and America.

        JUN DOBASHI 1910-1975 1910 - Tokyo -1975 (Japanese) Title: Composition no. 26, 1960's Technique: Original Signed Gouache, Watercolour and Pastel on card. size: 93 x 75 cm / 36.6 x 29.5 in Additional Information: This original work is hand signed by the artist "Jun Dobashi" in the lower right corner. It is inscribed verso: "No. 26". It was created in the 1960's. Provenance: The Bergman Collection, The Israel Museum Jerusalem. Charlotte Bergman, who died in Jerusalem on July 17 2003, one month before her 99th birthday, was unique among the museum's benefactors. She lived on the premises of the Israel Museum for three decades, and died there. When she made aliyah from New York to Israel in the 60's, the Belgian-born Bergman brought her collection of modern art with her and helped Jerusalem ex-mayor Teddy Kollek found the museum.
