Robert Dodd Sold at Auction Prices

Etcher, Painter, Illustrator, b. 1748 - d. 1816

(b London, 1748; d London, 1815) English Painter. Robert Dodd was one of the most important recorders of the maritime aspects of the French Revolution and the American War of Independence. Although little is known about his training, he lived and worked in Wapping and produced fine and meticulously researched portrayals of naval actions and portraits of famous ships. His paintings convey the drama of battles and storms through spectacular light effects, and even in a relatively peaceful image… the way the sunlight falls on the ships emphasizes Dodd's incredible attention to detail. Dodd also produced over a hundred engravings and aquatints, many of them views of the Royal Dockyards and Greenwich Hospital, and he regularly exhibited at the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy. ROBERT DODD, THE GREENLAND WHALE FISHERY

    Est: $150,000 - $250,000

DODD, Robert (1748 - 1816). The Greenland Whale Fishery. Oil on Canvas. 26" x 35 3/8" canvas. Provenance: (Sale, Christie's, London, March 18, 1977, lot 73) Richard Green, London; London; Christie’s South Kensington: Wednesday, November 8, 2006 - $168,437 The Greenland Whale Fishery had its beginnings along the coast of Spitsbergen in 1611. After about 1650, whalemen moved west in search of new bowhead stocks and the term "Greenland Whale Fishery" came to refer to pelagic whaling in the waters between Spitsbergen and Greenland. Whaling ships followed the northward summer migration of the bowhead, sailing first to Spitsbergen, and then drifting west to the edge of the East Greenland ice pack. The season generally lasted four to five months. In Dodd's painting, The Greenland Whale Fishery, the identity of the ships are not known. It can be said with some certainty that they were London-based vessels operating out of the Thames, from where the largest British whaling fleet emanated well into the 19th century. By the mid-18th century, the shortage of Arctic whales was sending fleets as far away as Greenland. In fact, the Howland Great Wet Dock at Rotherhithe - built at the end of the 17th century - was, in 1763, renamed the Greenland Dock. In 1783, the year in which this work is dated, the British whaling industry saw a marked revival after a wartime depression. The primary cause for the slump was the government commandeering of a large number of whale ships for use as transporters. The trade soon began to revive after the peace settlement with both France and the newly independent United States. Likewise, an increase in the government whaling bounty to forty shillings per ton was an added incentive for more vessels to join this extremely lucrative trade. In fact, profits were such that it seems plausible that this painting was commissioned simply to mark a general return to prosperity for the whaling industry rather than any specific expedition. This latter theory is supported by the fact that this painting was twice engraved and published, on the first occasion by John & Josiah Boydell of Cheapside in 1789 and again in 1795, by Fran. Ambrosi and Antoine Suntach. Two separate editions of these engravings would suggest a strong popular demand amongst whaling ship owners, masters and crews, for whom a generic image may have been more attractive than one of vessels belonging to their rivals. The engravings are reproduced in Kendall Whaling Museum Prints by M.V. and Dorothy Brewington, published in Sharon, Massachusetts, 1969, no. 151 and no. 189. Dodd undertook meticulous research for his paintings and was very accurate in his depiction of the details of ships and conditions at sea. From about 1783 he engraved over a hundred of his paintings in aquatint and as a result his work gained a wide audience. In particular, he was one of the principal recorders of naval actions in the American War of Independence and published many of his renderings of these battles. Dodd exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1780, and from 1782 to 1809 he exhibited at the Royal Academy. His masterpiece is the large (76 by 134 inches) painting of Lord Howe's famous victory over the French, The End of the Battle of the First of June.

Robert Dodd - Windsor Castle Packet and La Genie Privateer

    Est: £2,500 - £3,500

Robert Dodd,  British 1748-1815 Windsor Castle Packet and La Genie Privateer;  pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour heightened with scratching out on paper, inscribed 'WINDSOR CASTLE PACKET, and Le GENIE PRIVATEER / To William Rogers Esqr. commanding the Windsor Castle, and his brave Crew; this View, of their engaging and capturing a French / Privateer Schooner of superior force on the 1st of October 1807 / Comparative Force: Windsor Castle. 8 small Guns, 28 Men / Le Genie. 6 six Pounders one 24 P. 86 Men' to the lower margin, 30.2 x 35.4 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  A print after the present drawing is held in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich [PAG9422], as is another drawing by Dodd of ''La Blanche' towing 'La Pique', a French prize' [PAF5856], similarly depicting the sails battered by canon fire. As Robert Dodd also used to engrave his own naval battle scenes for wider distribution, it is likely that the present picture, which is accompanied by an inscription to the lower margin, is a preparatory study for the known print of this subject.  The 'Windsor Packet' was launched at Yarmouth in 1804, serving as a Falmouth packet, often completing journeys to New York and the Caribbean islands of Barbados and Jamaica. The ship is best known for its decisive defeat of the French privateer schooner 'Jeune Richard', which, despite the much greater resources and man-power of the French vessel, resulted in its capture at the hands of the 'Windsor Packet'. A contemporary report of the action describes how 'This achievement reflects the highest honour upon every office, man, and boy that was on board the Windsor Castle; and, in particular, the heroic valour of her commander, so decisive of the business, ranks above all the praise. Had Captain Rogers stayed to calculate the chances that were against him, the probability is, that the privateer would have ultimately succeeded in capturing the packet; whose light carronades could have offered very little resistance at the usual distance at which vessels engage; and whose very small crew, without such a coup-de-main, ay, and without such a leader, could never have brought the combat to a favourable issue'.

The British fleet was led in the battle by Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson.
