Original Vintage WWI Poster Teamwork Builds Ships by Stevens 1916

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

A team is hard at work riveting a hull of a warship in this American WWI poster. Building naval ships became one of the most important home front jobs in America during WWI. The reason for this lies in the founding principles of the United States Shipping Board, which was formed in 1916 before the outbreak of the War. When the Spanish American War of 1898 ended, right on the heels of Reconstruction, America was strapped for cash. Congress capitalized on this time of relative peace, choosing to save money by divesting much of its commercial shipping lanes. By 1914, less than 10% of global trade was run with American-owned ships. As conflicts began to brew in Europe, the American government wisely realized their mistake in depending on mostly European ships for trade. The United States Shipping Board was formed in 1916 with the initial goal of creating ships the country could use as war broke out overseas. Less than two months after its formation, however, war reached the USA and the board's goal pivoted dramatically. The Emergency Fleet Corporation, the department that issued this poster, was formed and rapid construction began to make warships. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

DODGE, William de Leftwich ( American, 1867 - 1935) An Auction at the Mines, Colima. Oil on Cancas. 18 x 28 inches. Signed lower left. W.L. Dodge and inscribed Illustration for the Century Magazine, March 1891. Served as the source of the full page engraved illustration in Charles B. Gillespie. "Gold Hunters of California: A Miner's Sunday in Colima." The Century, vol. 42, no. 2 ( June 1891) p. 261. William de Leftwich Dodge was born in Bedford, Virginia, but spent most of his childhood and adolescence between Paris and Munich where his mother resided to pursue her art study. In 1895 he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme. At age nineteen he was awarded the gold medal of the American Art Association for a history painting depicting the death of Minnehaha, the subject of Longfellow?s popular poem, Hiawatha. This and other of his figurative work was painted from life and based on careful research to ensure its historical accuracy. In 1893, while still very young, he was commissioned to decorate the dome of the central building of the Colombian Exposition, the famous ?White City? in Chicago. He emerged as one of the most prominent muralists of the era, at a time when murals were regarded as an essential element of most public architecture, theaters, municipal buildings, and even some private homes. In 1906 he designed and had built for his use the classical Villa Francesca at Setauket, Long Island, a small corner of which is depicted in this painting.
