JOAQUÍN DOMÍNGUEZ BECQUER (Seville, 1817 - 1879) "Portrait of the Duchess of Montpensier "1853. Oil on canvas Signed and dated Portrait of HRH the Infanta María Luisa Fernanda de Borbón y Borbón Dos Sicilias (1832-1848) Duchess of Montpensier, Duchess of Galliera and Princess of Orleans by Joaquin Dominguez Becquer (1817-1879) This exceptional romantic portrait of the Duchess of Montpensier was signed in Seville in 1856. The marriage of HRH Anthony of Orleans, Prince of France and Duke of Montpensier was an affair of state which, together with that of the Queen of Spain, occupied King Louis-Philippe Orleans and Queen Victoria of Great Britain, gathered for the occasion at the castle of Eu, in 1845 with their ministers Guizot and Lord Aberdeen, at the request of the Queen Regent of Spain, María Cristina de Borbón Dos Sicilias, who had forged it during her exile in France since 1840 and who, on her return to Spain in 1844, continued with the marriage project, sponsored by the King of France. In this important meeting the marriages of the Queen of Spain, Isabella II with a member of the house of Bourbon were agreed, Don Francisco de Asis would be the chosen one and that of her sister, the Infanta Luisa Fernanda with the Duke of Montpensier. In spite of having agreed that this marriage would not take place before Queen Isabel II had children, Antonio de Orleans, supported by his father, would sign his engagement in Pamplona in 1845 and the marriages of the queen and her sister would be celebrated at the same time against the wishes of England. On the night of October 10, 1846, the wedding of the two sisters took place in the Ambassadors' Hall of the Royal Palace. The common godmother of all the bride and groom was the Queen Regent Doña María Cristina. He was godfather of Don Antonio de Orleans and the Infanta Maria Luisa Fernanda, the Duke of Ahumada and Queen Isabel II and Don Francisco de Asis, the Infante Don Francisco de Paula. The Dukes of Bailen, Castroterreño and Riansares were witnesses of the wedding. On the morning of the 11th the wake was celebrated in the basilica of Atocha and there were great celebrations in Madrid. The fall of the monarchy of Luis Felipe in France in February of 1848 changes the destiny of the couple and makes that the dukes of Montpensier that were in Paris, have to go to the exile. In March they embarked after meeting with Leopold I of Belgium to Spain, arriving in Madrid in April. The dukes request the payment of the 57 million reales pending from the inheritance of King Ferdinand VII and the three million reales a year assigned to the Infanta to which the state had committed itself. After reaching a positive agreement with General Narváez, who did not want the couple in the capital, they decided to move to Seville. The purchase of the magnificent palace of San Telmo, a public building, as residence of the dukes, would take place in June of 1849, happening this emblematic building to be the official residence of the dukes of Montpensier in September of that year, after having spent the summer in Sanlucar, place that was of their special liking and where they would end up constructing a magnificent palace of oriental historicist type in 1851 in a great lot of 10.Two thirds of the 10,000 meters of which would be dedicated to the gardens, designed by Lecolant and Hubert, and in charge of Francisco Morón who planted and cared for them, like those of San Telmo in Seville. In 1852 the Duke of Montpensier acquired the abandoned botanical garden of La Paz, whose wells were used to irrigate the garden of the Sanluqueño palace, with efficient and modern canalizations. That same year he bought the Torrebreva estate, which included numerous estates. The efficient administration of the duke and the good management of his patrimony, generated prosperity in Sanlucar and Seville, where there was a proliferation of stores of royal suppliers and a court of nobles who gathered around the dukes in San Telmo, which Queen Isabel II baptized as the small court. Numerous artists were present in this small court such as Delacroix, Blanchard, Danzats and Lewis among the international artists. The collection of works of art of the dukes, which included works by Goya, Winterhalter, and Vicente Lopez, was enriched with the best local artists, among them the author of the present work, Joaquin Dominguez Becquer, who was given the honorary position of painter of the chamber. This magnificent portrait of the Duchess of Montpensier falls within the full Spanish romanticism and casticismo, so fashionable during the decade of 1850 in Seville. If other painters such as Cabral Bejarano, Manuel Rodriguez de Guzmán, Escacena and Cano de la Peña painted works that decorated the halls of the ducal palace, it would be Domínguez Becquer the one in charge of painting the Infanta Maria Luisa Fernanda in large format outside the gardens of her palace with a perspective of the present museum of Ca ATRIBUIDO A GIUSEPPE BONITO (Castellammare di Stabia, 1707 - Nápoles, 1789) "Retrato de caballero ". Óleo sobre lienzo Medidas:90 x 69 cm.

JOAQUÍN DOMÍNGUEZ BÉCQUER (Seville, 1817 - 1879). "Andalusian couple". Oil paintings on panels (x2). They have frames of the nineteenth century. Signed in the lower left area. Measurements: 63 x 47,5 cm (x2); 72 x 58,5 cm (frames, x2). Pair of oil paintings with the same theme and composition, indicating that they were originally conceived together. One of them presents a lady dressed in the fashion of the time, while the other presents a man following the regional fashion. The costumbrista theme is rooted in the romantic vision that, among other aspects, pays special attention to those traditional, popular or typical customs that reflect what is understood as the genuine way of being and living of the people of the village, their traditions and values, and does so, moreover, from a mythical and idealized perspective in which the popular classes, especially those of the rural environment, are always opposed to the model that personifies the growing city, which has grown in the heat of industrialization. This model of costumbrismo assumed in Romanticism survives for a long time in the European pictorial culture of the 19th century, since later Realism, although it sometimes introduces a more objective and dispassionate vision and focuses its attention on the hardness of work, continues to disseminate images of peasants and their tasks, rural customs, traditional trades, in short, much of what was feared to disappear in a few decades. Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer learned the first rudiments of the art of painting from his cousin José, the initiator of this outstanding dynasty of painters, and in turn was the teacher of his nephew Valeriano Bécquer, Gustavo Adolfo's brother. The young painter then entered the Santa Isabel School of Fine Arts in Seville, an institution of which, over the years, he would become a professor and director, as well as an academician since 1847. He was also a member of the Real Academia Sevillana de las Buenas Letras, one of the founders of the Liceo Artístico of his native city, and was commissioned by Isabel II to direct the pictorial works carried out on the occasion of the restoration of the Reales Alcázares of Seville. He was honorary chamber painter of the queen from 1850, as well as drawing teacher of his nephews. Maximum exponent of the Sevillian costumbrista painting, considered creator of the Sevillian romantic school, he also dedicated himself to portrait and history painting. His style, of great academic correctness derived from a deep knowledge of ancient Spanish painting, was characterized by the scenographic sense of his outdoor paintings, with a rich play of hallmarks that give depth to the works. The relevance of Domínguez Bécquer in the Seville of the mid-nineteenth century allowed him access to the select circle of friends of the Dukes of Montpensier, established in the city of Seville in 1848 and main patrons and promoters of the renewal of the local art scene. Especially, during these years genre painting experienced a great development, which spread the romantic myth of Spain with Andalusia as the absolute center of the exotic charm that foreign travelers were looking for in the Peninsula. Domínquez Bécquer participated in this Spanish costumbrismo on numerous occasions. Domínguez Bécquer is represented in the Prado Museum, the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián, the Romantic Museum in Madrid, the Bonnat Museum in Bayonne, the Fine Arts Museums in Seville and Huelva, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, among others.

He took part in exhibitions held in the city by institutions such as the Lyceum. With well-deserved fame, he is recorded in 1845 as being in charge of the restoration work on the Reales Alcazares of Seville, a responsibility that earned him the post of court painter to Queen Isabella II five years later. These merits led him to be elected a member of the Seville Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a lecturer, director of drawing and honorary member in 1847. Nine years later he was awarded the first prize and gold medal at the exhibition held by the institution at the museum. In 1866 he was elected a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy in Madrid.Joaquin Dominguez Becquer had close ties with the Duke and Duchess of Montpensier and worked as drawing instructor to their children and painted for them, chiefly portraits, at their palace of San Telmo. His genre paintings belonged to major collections of the day and were shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855 and the following year at the first National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. He was also a prolific history painter, as borne out by the fact that in 1860 Seville council commissioned him to paint La paz de Wad-Ras ("The Peace of Wad-Ras") commemorating the war with Morocco in 1859-60. In order to document his work he travelled to Morocco and was awarded the Cross of Charles III on his return. He died in Seville on 26 July 1879.
