Hisao Domoto (1928-2013, Japanese) Untitled blue and red abstract, 1967 Oil on canvas Signed in English and Japanese, dated and inscribed verso: Domoto / NY 30" H x 58" W Provenance: Nantenshi Gallery, Tokyo, Japan Sale: Sotheby's Hong Kong, "EYE / EAST," May 22, 2020, lot 5009 Private Collection, purchased from the above by the current owner Notes: Hisao Domoto felt stifled by the traditional Japanese painting of his upbringing. He made his way to Paris to study art after World War II. He felt freer to experiment with texture, color, form, and constructivism. After winning several prestigious awards, he garnered recognition in Europe through representation at Stadler Gallery in Paris. His paintings in the mid-1960s employ pattern evocative of tire tracks. Domoto's use of primary colors accentuate the complexity and division between physicality and composition. The present work contrasts from his earlier loose and expressive style, where he uses muted tones and a free-flowing hand. In 1966 Domoto began employing more geometric shapes and a year later, his work relied heavily upon circular forms. These shapes became a crucial building block within his work. In 1967 Domoto's career transformed when his atelier closed in Paris and he returned to his homeland in Tokyo. Domoto would say, "For me, Paris was a place for thinking. New York was a place to work. Tokyo was a place to have a good time."

    Jul. 04, 2020

    HISAO DOMOTO

    Est: CHF30,000 - CHF50,000

HISAO DOMOTO (1928 Kyoto 2013) Untitled. 1961. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated, numbered and with location: Domoto 1961-13 PARIS, as well as signed in Japanese. 97 × 130 cm. Provenance: Private collection Switzerland. “Gutai art does not alter matter: it lends it life. Gutai art does not distort matter. In Gutai art the human spirit and matter shake hands with each other, although they are usually opposed to one another. Matter does not enter the spirit. The spirit does not force matter into subordination”. (Gutai Manifesto, 1956) Hsiao Dômoto was born in Kyoto in 1928 into a wealthy family. His father was a famous collector of traditional Japanese art and his uncle Inshô Dômoto, was an equally famous Japanese painter in the Nihonga style. In his early years, Hisao Dômoto initially remained true to the family spirit and studied traditional painting at the Kyoto school of art. He enjoyed some success in Japan, but soon discovered contemporary western art, particularly at the 1952 Salon de Mai in Japan – where the emerging Japanese avant-garde, the Gutai Group, was represented – and during a trip to Europe in the same year. From then onwards he adopted western techniques, and was attracted first to Surrealism, but later devoted himself exclusively to abstract art. Dômoto settled in France in 1955. At this time, his works were characterised by their concrete content. He initially made a name for himself with airy, romantic calligraphy in the manner of Zao Wou-Ki, and approximated the style of the Lyrical Abstraction group. While working with the Parisian Galerie Stadler between 1957 and 1960 he discovered his own style, and from 1960 developed his concept of “Solution de Continuité”. As the present painting from 1961 shows, his works from these years are characterised by an impastoed application of the paint on the canvas. His works are a reflection of spontaneous improvisation and appear to be a direct expression of his artistic feelings. He makes use of a broad and richly contrasting colour palette, so that the paint dances on the canvas like flames, wind, or frantic waves at sea with an almost meditative flow. Dômoto also seems to experiment with the ductility and malleability of colour pigments. The sometimes flowing and energetic brush strokes, the blurred areas, and the splashes of colour appeal to the imagination of the viewer: clouds, mountain landscapes, rocky formations and waterfalls take shape before our inner eye. The compositions on the canvas may burn in splendid colour, creating a powerful depth and density, with movements of both resurgence and fading away, of sunrise and sunset, bright and at the same time mysterious. The viewer is lost in a splendidly abstract landscape painting. --------------- HISAO DOMOTO (1928 Kyoto 2013) Ohne Titel. 1961.

Hisao Domoto Solution de Continuite II Acrylic on Paper

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Hisao Domoto (1928-2013). Acrylic and graphite on paper titled Solution de Continuite II, dating to 1970. Signed along the lower right. A tag from Martha Jackson Galleries, New York City is attached to the verso. Biography: Hisao Domoto was born in Kyoto to a family of artists. His uncle, Insho Domoto, was a well-respected member of the Japanese art scene, known for his works in the traditional Japanese Nihonga style, particularly his temple screens. Domoto began his art education by studying Nihonga painting at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts. He achieved early critical success while still in school there, exhibiting at the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, where his work was met with high acclaim. In 1952, he traveled to Paris to study oil painting. He soon became associated with the Art Informel movement, which was flourishing in Europe at the time with its spontaneous abstractions and focus on breaking artistic tradition. He achieved great success in this style, staging his first solo exhibition in 1957 and winning prestigious awards such as the Lissone International Art Exhibition Award. In the early 1960s, however, Domoto grew disillusioned with the Art Informel movement, and began to develop a style uniquely his own. He continued to create abstract works, but instead of rejecting tradition the way his Art Informel peers did, he looked to his traditional Japanese training for inspiration, creating careful, clean compositions. His Solutions of Continuities series marks this turning point in in his artistic mindset. In this series, which Domoto began in 1963, he broke new ground for abstract art with his technicality and intentional composition as well as his usage of traditional Japanese techniques and aesthetics. This piece, Solution de Continuité II, painted in 1970, is a stunning example of the innovations of this series. Domoto’s masterful skill is evident in the subtlety of the painting, particularly the creation of depth by using varying transparencies of paint. The clean, matte finish of the painting is reminiscent of his early Nihonga training, while the subject matter remains abstract. These elements, combined with Domoto’s own style of neat yet highly dimensional composition, make this piece a fine and unique example of Domoto’s work.
