Sein umfangreichstes Werk umfasste 16 Bände zu den Insekten Großbritanniens. Es ist jedoch sein Werk zu den Insekten Chinas, das wohl einige seiner prachtvollsten Illustrationen enthält. Donovan schrieb nicht nur über die Insekten Chinas, er illustrierte das Werk auch und fertigte die Kupfertafeln an. - Ränder minimal gebräunt, tls. leicht stockfleckig. Insgesamt ein sehr schönes Exemplar mit farbkräftigen und detailreichen Kupfertafeln. Zoology - Entomology - With 50 hand-coloured copper plates. Red morocco with gilt-stamped title, cover fillets and gilt edges and inner edges, as well as gilt edges (corners slightly rubbed, minimally stained). - First edition. - Edward Donovan (1768-1837), an English natural historian and artist, had a special interest in the field of entomology and published several works on the insects of various geographical regions. His most extensive work comprised 16 volumes on the insects of Great Britain. However, it is this work on the insects of China that contains some of his most splendid illustrations. Donovan not only wrote about the insects of China, he also illustrated the work and produced the copper plates. - Margins minimally browned, some light foxing. Donovan was an avid natural history collector, fellow of the Linnean Society and the Wernerian Natural History Society. He also opened his own private museum in 1807, the London Museum and Institute of Natural History. Donovan’s engravings are noted for their exceptionally hand-colored images. He drew the images himself from his own museum as well as the collections of Sir Joseph Banks & Dru Drury.
