      Hope Smith (1879 - 1965) Oil on Canvas, Signed Lower Left " Hope Smith " Measures ( 19 x 22 inches ) w/frame ( 24.5 x 28 inches ) Hope Smith was born on May 10, 1879 in Providence, Rhode Island. She was a painter of oil and watercolor--noted for rural and urban scenes of Providence ; late paintings, marine scenes of Maine; genre, and landscape. She studied under Mary Wheeler, Wheeler School ; Rhode Island School of Design (enrolled in painting classes 1905, 1906) ; under C. H. Woodbury, Ogunquit, ME ; W. M. Chase, ASL ; Académie Julian, Paris ; Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. She was a member of the Providence Art Club and the South County Art Association.
