Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf, 1988. - Rechnung des Auktionshauses Kastern, Hannover aus dem Jahr 1983 liegt vor. - Rechnung für Konservierungs- und Restaurierungsmaßnahmen mit Dokumentation der erfolgten Maßnahmen aus dem Jahr 1984 liegt vor. Der niederländisch-deutsche Künstler van Douven absolvierte zunächst eine Lehre bei dem niederländischen Stilllebenmaler Christoffel Puytlinck. Dessen Unterweisung verhalf ihm augenscheinlich zu besonderer Fertigkeit in der Darstellung von Stoffen und Oberflächen. Van Douven war u. a. in Deutschland, Dänemark, Italien und Frankreich als Hofmaler tätig. Besonders geschätzt wurde er offenbar von dem kunstbegeisterten Kurfürsten Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, im niederrheinischen Volksmund Jan Wellem genannt. Mehrere Male ließ dieser sich und seine zweite Gemahlin Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici von van Douven in Herrscherbildnissen und Porträts abbilden. Van Douven war außerdem als Kunstagent für Jan Wellem tätig: eigenhändige Schreiben aus dem Jahr 1693, die im Düsseldorfer Stadtmuseum aufbewahrt werden, belegen Ankäufe für die fürstliche Sammlung von Gemälden zeitgenössischer Meister der niederländischen, flämischen und italienischen Schulen.

    PORTRAIT DER GATTIN DES KURFÜRSTEN WILHELM VON DÜSSELDORF Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 53,5 x 42,5 cm. Brustbild nach rechts in Andeutung einer weiten, abendlichen Landschaft, das Gesicht wirkungsvoll beleuchtet, die Dame trägt ein rosafarbenes Kleid mit weitem, gerüschtem Ausschnitt, das Haar hochgebunden, am Ohr eine große, ovale Perle. Als Kopfbedeckung in origineller Weise ein Hut in Form eines Flachkegels, aus bunten Federn zusammengesetzt, in Art der Attributbekleidung des Kontinents Amerika. Oil on canvas. 42 x 30,5cm. Framed. Reverse side: an aged label with notes on provenance mounted to the stretcher. Provenance: Ferdinand von Sury von Bussy - von Glutz - Blotzheim (b.1862), Solothurn 1889. Marquise d'Espinasse is portrayed, the daughter of Count du Luc and the Lady of Electors Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658 - 1716), to whose Dusseldorf court Douven was court painter after 1682. After the Elector von der Pfalz married Anna Marid de' Medici in 1691, he refined Dusseldorf into a stronghold for social events, balls, music and fireworks.

Perizia/Gutachten: Dr. Ekkehard Mai vom Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Köln, 29. August 1995: ”aufgrund der Faktur habe ich keinen Zweifel, dass es sich tatsächlich um ein Bild des Künstlers (van Douven) handelt.” Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan: das Porträt zeigt ”mit absoluter Sicherheit Großherzog Cosimo III. von Toskana und stammt von van Douven”. “Il ritratto rappresenta del tutto sicuramente il Granduca Cosimo III di Toscana,è opera del tutto autografa di Jan Frans van Douven”. Jan Frans van Douven war ein bedeutender Porträtmaler, der die Bildnisse vieler hoher Persönlichkeiten schuf, weshalb er 1682 als Hofmaler nach Düsseldorf berufen wurde. Kurfürst Johann Wilhelm nahm ihn mit auf eine Reise nach Wien, wo er den Kaiser und die Kaiserin malte und im Auftrag des Monarchen auf weiteren Reisen zahlreiche andere Fürsten Europas malte. Das vorliegende Bildnis Cosimo III. ist wahrscheinlich anlässlich seines Aufenthaltes in Florenz entstanden. An dem Zustandekommen der berühmten Düsseldorfer Gemäldegalerie hat van Douven entscheidendmitgewirkt. Seine Porträts weisen - wie das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt - den von den großen französischen Bildnismalern beeinflussten repräsentativen Stil auf. Provenienz: deutscher Privatbesitz

    Portrait of John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough, oil on canvas, 86 x 67.5 cm, framed, (Wo) Provenance: private collection, Munich Apart from this painting there also exists a drawing that shows the Duke at a younger age and in armour, executed in the reverse direction from the painting (see lot 181). The present portrait shows the famous military commander and comrade-in-arms of Prince Eugene of Savoy in the War of the Spanish Succession. He was an ancestor of the British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The sitter's identity was confirmed by Blenheim Palace, the ancestral castle of the Dukes of Marlborough, and the National Portrait Gallery, London (oral communication). In 1714, when Douven painted this portrait, John Churchill could already look back on an eventful life. In the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714) he had been entrusted with leading the English and Netherlandish troops. The Holy Roman Emperpor, Great Britian, the States General (Holland) and later also Prussia and Savoy had formed the Great Alliance in order to prevent the Bourbon Duke Philippe of Anjou from seizing power in Spain, where the Archduke and future Emperor Charles VI was supposed to succeed to the throne after the death of the last Spanish Habsburg Emperor Charles II. In the Battle of Höchstädt (north of Augsburg on the Danube), Prince Eugene and Marlborough achieved a historic victory whose consequences are still effective today. From July 1 to September 7, 2004 Bavaria presented a large-scale exhibition, Brennpunkt Europas 1704, in Höchstädt Castle. To reward Marlborough for his vital services during the war, Queen Anne and the English Parliament presented him with Blenheim Palace near Oxford in 1705, his personal monument of victory, which today is one of the most frequented English country estates. The Emperor in Vienna thanked Marlborough by raising him to the rank of a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1711, when the Tories came to power in England, he fell into discrace, which could not even be remedied by the intervention of his comrade-in-arms Prince Eugene. The Marlboroughs had to go into exile to the Netherlands and later to Germany. Since 1682 Jan Frans van Douven had been a portraitist at the court of Elector Palatine Jan Wellem. He was also active in Vienna, creating the likenesses of Emperor Leopold I and his wife Eleonore. See also the preface to this catalogue.
