His 1911 trip to the Grand Canyon took Arthur Wesley Dow far afield both geographically and artistically from what had been comfortable art-making territory. As a painter and print-maker he had distilled beautiful color patterns from the flat marshlands around his Ipswich, Massachusetts, home, in accordance with the Japanese principles of composition that he held dear. In tiny woodblock prints, and on small canvases, Dow produced spare, poetic landscapes of cultivated nature, charming by their associations with the simple rural life, the contemplative mind, and the restorative value of nature in its tranquil moods. But his first visit to the Grand Canyon—there would be others, such was its hold on the imagination—proved transformative for Dow, who painted at least seventeen expansive and distinctly modern canvases on the subject over the course of fifteen months. The Grand Canyon had been generating interest among American painters for years—their productions helped to lure visitors westward on the Santa Fe Railway, to the red and gold sandstone place of the pictures. But Dow came to the subject clear-eyed. He freed his imagination to follow the dictates of the canyon itself—its varying color and shimmering light, sometimes cool blue and glittering silver, as though to give life to the natural colors of the earth; and its incomprehensible scale and distances. As the canyon revealed itself to him, Dow in turn showed the world, in his pictures, "a cañon quite different from any other known to modern art," the New York Times would declare when the paintings went on public view. Dow unveiled the Grand Canyon group at Montross Gallery in New York in April 1913. They were all big, impressive canvases, befitting his subject, but Cosmic Cities was the largest. In his especially vivid text in the accompanying catalogue, the artist described the forces that had brought the paintings into being. "You ask what attracted me to the Grand Canyon—so far from my New England marshes," Dow began. He answered his rhetorical question by naming the canyon's three most captivating attributes:
