Rackstraw Downes Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1939 -

(b Pembury, Kent, England,1939) British-American Painter. Rackstraw Downes first gained notoriety as an art critic before devoting his career to teaching and painting. He received his BA in 1961 from Cambridge University in English Literature. In 1964 he was awarded a BFA and MFA from Yale University. While attending Yale, his painting style was abstract, but, after visiting the Whitney Annual, Downes decided to focus his efforts on creating paintings of spaces that go unnoticed. He is best known for working en plein air to create panoramic landscapes, often of urben areas; these are rendered in crisp, clear colors and prescise detail. Downes currently lives and works in New York.

(81.3 x 119.4 cm) Property from Ambassador Henry E. and Jessica Catto Provenance: Betty Cunningham Art Gallery, New York (label verso) Salander-O'Reilly Gallery, New York (label verso) Both Jessica and Henry Catto were admired public figures. Their resumes are extensive, but a few things stand out as found online at Wikipedia.com. It is an interesting footnote that he had been Chief of Protocol of the United States because, when as the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. appointed by George H. W. Bush and as the true Texan he himself was, he greeted the Queen with "How ya doin?" After taking up his position he had flown the Texas flag above Winfield House, his official residence and planted a wooden cut-out of a Hereford steer (in protest, he said, at the EU ban on American beef) on the lawn outside. He held the position until 1991, when he became the director of the United States Information Agency. He had previously been Ambassador to El Salvador and to the United States Office at Geneva. Many years later, Catto became a member of the Board of the National Public Radio Foundation, having served on the NPR Board from 1995 to 2001. He was also a member of the Smithsonian National Board, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Advisory Council of America Abroad Media. He was Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of Texas at San Antonio, held honorary LLD degrees from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and St. Mary's University in San Antonio, and was a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in London. He authored Ambassadors at Sea: The High and Low Adventures of a Diplomat (University of Texas Press, 1998). He chaired too many organizations to list them all here, but his association with the the Aspen Institute, where he, served as vice chairman, and the Atlantic Council where he was chairman and later chairman emeritus, were of particular importance to him. At the Aspoen Institute he and his wife, Jessica Hobby Catto, had established the Catto Fellowship for a Sustainable Future. They also supported the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. Jessica Catto was a noted conservationist and journalist who wrote a blog for the Huffington Post on conservation, the media, and political issue until her death in 2009. . The Music Hall at Snug Harbor is one of th Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is the result of the conversion of the first home for retired sailors in the United States to a regional arts center where history, architecture, visual art, theater, dance, music and environmental science come together. It is the largest ongoing adaptive reuse project in America, consisting of 28 buildings in a largely Greek Revival style, a unique architectural and historic complex oldest concert halls in the City, second only to Carnegie Hall, and serves as the centerpiece for performing arts.
