For his still-life subject depictions, he buys or borrow props from antique shops, and draws directly onto prepared canvas. "Color is then added, and for me the fun begins when I start painting the details---tarnish on metal, a stain on a lace handkerchief---that's what it is all about. I try to create a sense of immediacy. I want people to feel that the inhabitants of the room were there only a moment ago." (Samuels 160).
