              JOSEF DRAHOŇOVSKÝ 1877 - 1938 - GIRL WITH A VASE

              Est: -

Drahoňovský's works can be found in the collections of the aristocracy and the Church, the Museo Vaticano, the Pierpont Morgan Museum in New York, the Museum de la monofacture de Sévres, museums in Moscow and private collections in many countries. The intaglio with an antiquizing motif continues an artistic tradition that Drahonovsky has managed to reassert. His childhood under Kozákov in the Bohemian Paradise, a region full of legends and deposits of semi-precious stones, probably contributed to his love. Technique: quartz, Signed: sign. lower center: 1925 J. Drahoňovský

Josef Drahovský, an important Czech sculptor and glyptic artist, became a professor at the School of Applied Arts in Prague in 1911. By that time he had already made the remarkable monumental sculpture The Wanderer and was working on the sculpture Interview. He worked on the façade and interior decoration of the Chamber of Commerce and Trade in Prague, the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Pilsen, and in Prague's Královské Vinohrady district he decorated the building of the Na Smetanka burgher school near Riegrovy Sady, and other buildings in Prague and Pilsen. Since 1918 he has been intensively engaged in cutting glass and precious stones. Glyptics captivated him and, in addition to his work as a teacher and sculptor, he created works in this field whose fame soon crossed borders and Drahoňovský became a renowned artist in Europe. We find articles about his achievements, for example, in Zlaté Praze, Český květ, Topič's anthology, Volné směry and in many foreign journals and anthologies. Signed: signed on the plinth: J. A charming oval necklace with a motif of a female nude and wine is topped with a brilliant cut diamond set in a white gold mounting. Drahonovsky once said of the glyptic: "Stone carving is actually sculpture in miniature. The knowledge of modelling, drawing, the knowledge of the laws of perfect relief, the harmony of graded surfaces, of light, all these form the basic values of good engraving in stone and glass." From 1918 onwards, he devoted himself to cutting glass and gems with great intensity, and glyptics completely absorbed him. The intaglio is in a variant of crystal with a slight smoky tinge, a material that Josef Drahoňovský also used for jewellery making at this time. Signed: Signed: JD

A girl's cameo made of traditional material used for ancient glyptics due to a unique white-red layered patterning. The nature of the work and the rare, difficult-to-process material require a lot of patience and a lot of time, as Josef Drahoňovský himself recalls.
