Grace Gebbie Wiederseim Drayton (1877 - 1936) Pencil and Watercolor, Signed, Measures (5.5 x 8.5 inches) w/frame (12 x 16 inches) Viola Grace Gebbie was born October 14, 1877, the third daughter of George Gebbie, a lithographer, who was Philadelphia's first art printer. She married Theodore E. Wiederseim, Jr., an employee of Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Company, in Philadelphia in 1904 and started signing her work "Grace Wiederseim or G G Wiederseim". She claimed to owe her "funny babies" to Wiederseim, who recognized her potential, but she divorced him in 1911. Divorce in the Catholic Church was forbidden; hers disgraced the whole family ." In 1911, Grace divorced Wiedersheim and married W. Heyward Drayton III, and started signing her work Grace Drayton. She divorced Drayton in 1923 but continued to sign her work "Grace Drayton" or "G G Drayton."

Drayton was one of the most successful women illustrators of her generation. She studied with painter Robert Henri and became a freelance artist in 1895. She contributed to books, magazines and advertising campaigns, most notably for Campbell's Soup, creating the ubiquitous Campbell Kids. She was one of the first and accomplished women to draw syndicated newspaper comic strips, and contributed the monthly "Dolly Dingle" paper dolls in Pictorial Review. She married Theodore Wiedersham in 1911; and after divorcing him in 1911, she wed William Drayton. and kept his name despite taking a third husband..

School of Grace Drayton (American, 1877-1936). Group of two 1930s gouache on illustration board paintings depicting young children for Campbell's Soup advertising campaigns. One depicting a Dolly Dingle-type character Campbell's Soup Kid doubling as a railroad flagbearer with lantern ablaze attesting to the importance of the railroad in 20th century American history. Verso is stamped with a usage print date of October 11, 1933. One depicting a Dolly Dingle character Campbell's Soup Kid putting the finishing touches on their soapbox derby bi-plane early aviation age-inspired racing car, ca 1931-33. Lot essay: These two works are excellent examples of the Campbell's Soup Kids illustrations. The Campbell's Soup Kids appeared in print ads in countless American mainstream publications such as The Saturday Evening Post. The brainchild of illustrator Grace Wiederseim Drayton, who debuted the first Campbell's Soup Kid ad in 1904, the characters became so popular, that the company soon hired a number of illustrators to create ads in the manner of Drayton. It's unknown whether Drayton herself is the illustrator of this example. The Campbell Kids have been selling Campbell's Soup since 1904 when Grace Wiederseim Drayton, an illustrator and writer, added some sketches of children to her husband's advertising layout for a Campbell's condensed soup. The Campbell advertising agents loved the child appeal and choose Mrs. Wiederseim's sketches as trademarks. In the beginning, Campbell Kids were drawn as ordinary boys and girls, later, Campbell Kids took on the personas of policemen, sailors, soldiers, and other professions. Grace Wiederseim Drayton will always be the "mother" of Campbell Kids. She drew for the company advertising for nearly twenty years. Drayton's designs were so popular that doll makers wanted to capitalize on their popularity. Campbell's gave the E. I. Horsemen Company the license to market dolls with the Campbell label on their sleeves. Horseman even secured two U.S. design patents for the dolls' clothes. Today, Campbell's Soup Company, with its famous red and white label, remains a staple in the kitchen as well as American culture.

One titled "Dandy to Me," depicting a young child reading the latest stock news from a state of the art glass domed stock ticker machine, 1930. A surreal take on the 1929 stock market crash that led to the Great Depression, this work originally appeared in a 1930 Campbell's Soup advertisement in October 1930 above a poem that reads "The news that I'm reading look's dandy to me. Like a plateful of Campbell's Which fills me with glee." One titled "Sand Man's Coming Soon," depicting a young, Dolly Dingle-type girl tucking her doll into its bed, ca. 1930s. Originally for a Campbell's Soup advertising campaign, the work is accompanied by text that reads "Not a drop of Campbell's left upon her spoon, So the good old sand man's Coming mighty soon!" Includes 3 illustrations from The Baby Bears and the Weathercock (2 of them signed); 2 from The Baby Bears and the Valentines (1 signed); 1 from The Baby Bears and the Honey Pot (signed and dated 1914, with Century St. Nicholas Advertising Book slip on verso noting title is "Mother Spies Them"); 1 unidentified Baby Bear illustration (the two bears with a wolf carrying a cane and wearing a coat); a chubby-cheeked youngster, perhaps a Campbell's Soup Kid, with stamp on verso of F. Wallis Armstrong Co. Advertising Agents. c.1915 Nice selection of original sketches for illustrations, most featuring the Baby Bears. Grace Drayton, at times, through marriages, Grace Gebbie and Grace Wiederseim, 1877-1935, was one of the first and most successful female cartoonists. Among her creations were the series 'Bobby Blake' and 'Dolly Drake' for the Philadelphia Press; 'The Terrible Tales of Captain Kiddo', in collaboration with her sister, Margaret G. Hays; 'The Pussycat Princess,' and of course the much-loved advertisements for Campbell Soup, for which she never received credit. Some soiling and other wear, generally very good.

Original watercolor, ink & gouache drawing of two paper dolls for the opera Carmen and two additional outfits. 26x18, archivally matted and framed under Plexiglas. c.1920 Original watercolor design for paper dolls, one as Carmen in the opera of the same name, with two additional outfits, the other of toreador in full regalia. The dolls share many features, both are chubby-cheeked an very reminiscent of Drayton's Campbell Soup Kids, from which she gained her most enduring fame. Grace Drayton, at times, through marriages, Grace Gebbie and Grace Wiederseim, 1877-1935, was one of the first and most successful female cartoonists.
