Pierre Imbert Drevet (1697-1739) Portrait of Bishop Jacques Benigne Bossuet, after Rigaud, 1723.

      Est: £200 - £300

Pierre Imbert Drevet (1697-1739) Portrait of Bishop Jacques Benigne Bossuet, after Rigaud Engraving, 1723, second state, on laid paper with watermark of 'IHS' and cross within an orb, sheet 500 x 338 mm. (19 3/4 x 13 1/4 in), unframed. Literature: Firmin-Didot 1876 12.II ⁂ "This signed and dated portrait has always been regarded by print connoisseurs as a supreme example of the engraver's art [...] Drevet's ability to conjure from engraved lines the very stuff of fabrics, the satins, velvets, furs and cotton falling over the body in light and shadow, is astounding. The deep border of richly worked lace trimming the bishop's surplice is mesmerizing in its illusionism. On the crumpled pages of the open books, which symbolize the bishop's erudition, intricate shadows and reflected lights are captured by Drevet's burin without apparent difficulty." [Text from the Highlights section of British Museum website] It is said that Drevet engraved just thirty-three plates before insanity put an end to his career in 1726 at the age of twenty-nine.

ITALIAN SCHOOL (18th/19th century) THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST.

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Oil on canvas. Unframed. . Unsigned, inscribed on stretcher illegibly. Note: An engraving by French artist Pierre Drevet (1697-1739), in the Fogg Art Museum collection, has a similar composition to this one, noting the engraving was created after a painting by J. Andray. The ghostly figure sitting on the wall to the left of the canvas is replaced by an angel in the engraving. An image of the original painting by J. Andray or any other reference to it was not found. The skill of execution of the engraving far surpasses this painting, therefore, an assumption could be made that this work is likely also after the painting by J. Andray or possibly after the Drevet engraving. SIZE: 23" x 13-1/4" PROVENANCE: From the Marilyn Young Collection CONDITION: Good, craquelure, lined with 18th century hemp 49722-2

Print, Hercule Andre de Fleury, Rigaud

      Est: $50 - $100

Category: Prints Description: Le Cardinal du Fleury 1730, Hercule Andre de Fleury by Rigaud, The 18th century engraving is done by a century engraving by the French artist Pierre Drevet (1663-1738) and his son Pierre Imbert Drevet (1697-1739) .The engraving of the print is done on laid paper, which is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. Hercule Andre de Fleury’s portrait painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud's portraits were in high favor at the end of the seventeenth century and Drevet was the first to encounter the difficulties of translating into black and white the natural appearance of texture and materials in the latter's oil paintings. Always engraving after oil-paintings, Drevet was at times uneven, but this was arguably because the originals were uneven. His engravings were mainly the portraits of distinguished people.

Material: Laid paper Maker/Artist: Pierre Imbert Drevet Date: 18th century Provenance: n/a Size of Artwork: H. 28 x W. 22 in Weight (LBS) 1.6 Condition: The print is in good condition History: The Drevet Family were leading portrait engravers of France for over a hundred years. Their fame began with Pierre, and was sustained by his son, Pierre-Imbert, and by his nephew, Claude. His progress was rapid, and in 1696 he was made court engraver. In 1707 he was admitted to membership in the Académie des Beaux-Arts, his reception picture being an engraving of Robert de Cotte.Pierre-Imbert Drevet (22 June 1697 â€" 27 April 1739), called the Younger Pierre, was born and died in Paris. His father, the elder Drevet, instructed him, and he was engraving at the age of thirteen. At first he engraved after Charles Lebrun, but he soon developed a style of his own. He was his father's constant companion. In 1723 Pierre-Imbert finished his portrait of Bossuet after Rigaud. In 1724 the portrait of Cardinal Dubois was engraved; in 1730, a plate of Adrienne Lecouvreur For his engraving of Samuel Bernard, Rigaud himself made the drawing, an unusual event in eighteenth-century engraving. Besides his portraits, Pierre-Imbert produced many religious and historical plates, chiefly of Coypel. A sunstroke (1726) resulted in intermittent mental disability, which continued for thirteen years until his death. He kept on engraving until the end. He was a member of the Académie de Peinture and the king assigned him apartments in the Louvre. Among his pupils were artists François and Jacques Chéreau and Simon Vallée.His principal works were: Presentation of the Virgin, after Le Brun; Presentation in the Temple, after L. Boullogne; portraits of the Archbishop of Cambrai (after Joseph Vivien); and René Pucelle, his last work, after Rigaud.
