Housed in gilt carved frame with linen liner, matted under glass, OS: 17 1/2" x 21", SS: 8 1/4" x 11 1/4". Drewes studied at Bauhaus, was sponsored in New York by Kandinsky, taught at the Brooklyn Museum and at Columbia University. In 1940 he was appointed director of the WPA's graphic art division in New York. After teaching posts at Brooklyn College and at Moholy-Nagy's Institute of Design in Chicago, Drewes taught at Washington University in St. Louis from 1946 until his retirement in 1965.

Lower right dated: "45". Date: 1945 Description: Memorable and colourful drawing of a felled tree trunk. The work is particularly captivating because of the contrast between fresh, bright colour and the black that Drewes chose for the shadowed areas between the surrounding tree trunks. Werner Drewes studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the 1920s under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger and László Moholy-Nagy, among others. He travelled in Europe, North America and Asia. In 1930 Drewes left Germany and went to New York City, where he taught at Columbia University, among other places. From 1946 professor of design at Washington University in St. Louis and friendship with Max Beckmann.     Property from a Bluffton, SC Private Collection Description: Werner Drewes (American, 1899-1985), Halloween, Woodcut, 1981, pencil signed, dated 81 and numbered 11/XX, with COA and receipt from Associated American Artists, matted and framed. Frame size: 22 1/4 in. x 17 1/8 in. Werner Drewes was born in Canig, Germany. He attended the Stuttgart School of Architecture in 1920 but quickly transferred to the Stuttgart School of Arts and Crafts. After being drafted and serving in the war, Drewes studied at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1922 with Paul Klee, Wasiliy Kandinsky and many other notable artists. He immigrated to New York City in 1930 and helped found the American Abstract Artists group the following year. He also produced two series of woodcut prints, Manhattan and It CanÕt Happen Here in the early 1930s that are considered some of the earliest abstract prints issued in the United States. He continued to study printmaking at Stanley William HayterÕs Atelier 17 in 1944 where he met Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, and others. Drewes taught at several American institutions including the Brooklyn Museum with the WPA Federal Art Project, Columbia University, Brooklyn College, and Washington University in St. Louis. Drewes continued to teach and produce new artworks until his passing in Virginia in 1985. His work is included in many major institutions across the United States. Date: 1949 Description: The inscription at the bottom left indicates that the drawing of a seemingly impenetrable jungle was intended as a greeting from the artist to a friend. With loose and extremely confident strokes, Drewes aptly characterises the diversity of individual plants. Werner Drewes studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the 1920s under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger and László Moholy-Nagy, among others. He travelled in Europe, North America and Asia. In 1930, Drewes left Germany and went to New York City, where he taught at Columbia University, among other places. From 1946, he was a professor of design at Washington University in St. Louis and became friends with Max Beckmann.
