Elsie Driggs (American, 1898-1992) You've Seen Balloons Set––Haven't You? (From Emily Dickinson's Poems of Death)

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Elsie Driggs (American, 1898-1992) You've Seen Balloons Set––Haven't You? (From Emily Dickinson's Poems of Death) Signed and dated 'Elsie Driggs 1938' bottom right; signed again (twice) faintly bottom right; also accompanied by a hand-written rendition of Emily Dickinson's poem below, watercolor on paper Sheet size: 14 15/16 x 13 13/16 in. (37.9 x 35.1cm) Provenance Martin Diamond Fine Arts, Inc., New York, New York. Graham Gallery, New York, New York (as Balloons). Rosenfeld Fine Arts, New York, New York. Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk, New Jersey. Exhibited "Elsie Driggs: The Quick and the Classical," James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, January 19-April 13, 2008. "Elsie Driggs: A Woman of Genius," New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, New Jersey, October 13, 1990-January 6, 1991; and The Phillips Collection, Washington D.C., January 26-March 17, 1991 (traveling exhibition), no. 36. Literature Dr. Thomas C. Folk, Elsie Driggs: A Woman of Genius, an exhibition catalogue, New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, 1990, p. 36 ("thirty-six"), fig. 22 (illustrated). Constance Kimmerle, Elsie Driggs: The Quick and the Classical, James A. Michener Museum of Art, Doylestown, 2008, p. 97, no. 36 (illustrated). Note By the time she created the present work, Driggs had developed interest in Americana. The present work is based on first two stanzas of the Emily Dickinson poem, "You've seen Balloons–Haven't You?," published posthumously in 1896. In 1934, she had already created two watercolors that depicted characters from The Emperor Jones and Merrymount, both of which are derived from American literature including Nathaniel Hawthorne's The May Pole Lovers of Merrymount. Sulky (Lot 35) follows the same principle by adapting a typical subject derived from Currier & Ives' prints, and combining it with modernist shapes inspired by Paul Klee. In overall good condition. While the transcription of the poem is affixed to the verso of the overmat, the sheet itself is affixed to the undermat via two (realtively new) strips of white paper tape at upper left and upper right corners. With a band of discoloration running along the top outer edge of the sheet, which makes us think the work was previously affixed by a band of old brown paper tape along its top edge: faint remnants of old brown tape verso seem to confirm it. The outer edges of the work are straight and even. With more or less prominent scratching areas, which appear consistent with the artist's technique (see for example in the backgroun at center right, close to the right outer edge), center left. Slight discoloration smears make us think the work is lightly toned. With an almost diagonal crease running along the top tier of the work (which gets prominent at bottom right, where the crease is slightly crackled). See Specialist's pictures for more details. To request additional information or access to more images, please contact Specialist Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com. Frame: 27 1/4 x 21 1/2 x 1 1/4 in.

"Elsie Driggs: The Quick and the Classical," James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, January 19-April 13, 2008. Literature Dr. Thomas C. Folk, Elsie Driggs: A Woman of Genius, an exhibition catalogue, New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, 1990, p. 29 ("twenty-nine"), color plate 7 (illustrated). Constance Kimmerle, Elsie Driggs: The Quick and the Classical, James A. Michener Museum of Art, Doylestown, 2008, p. 89, no. 29 (illustrated). The work was not examined out of its frame. The sheet presents well, with relatively fresh colors. Some waviness is noticeable, due to the medium itself. Otherwise no sign of loss, repair or restoration in general. Elsie Driggs (American, 1898-1992) Egyptian Gothic

        Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Elsie Driggs (American, 1898-1992) Egyptian Gothic Signed 'Elsie Driggs' bottom right; also inscribed with title, artist and date '1939' on frame verso, watercolor, pencil and collage on paper Sheet size: 18 x 23 in. (45.7 x 58.4cm) Provenance Christie's, New York, sale of March 18, 1983, lot 69. Acquired directly from the above sale. Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk, New Jersey. Exhibited "Elsie Driggs: A Woman of Genius," New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, New Jersey, October 13, 1990-January 6, 1991; and The Phillips Collection, Washington D.C., January 26-March 17, 1991 (traveling exhibition), no. 39. Literature Dr. Thomas C. Folk, Elsie Driggs: A Woman of Genius, an exhibition catalogue, New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, 1990, p. 37 ("thirty-seven"), fig. 24 (illustrated as dated '1940'). Note Elsie Driggs was at the forefront of the Precisionist movement and one of the few recognized female artists of the genre–one defined by its emphasis on geometric forms, clean lines, and a fascination with the modern industrial landscape. Driggs received her early arts education at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts and later attended the Art Students League in New York. When she first approached a gallery about selling her work in 1924 she was advised not to sign her work so the owner would not know she was female. She is perhaps best-known for her masterwork Pittsburgh (1927), which is considered one of the defining works of the movement. Her work typically focuses on the interplay between nature and industry, and explores the relationship between the natural world and built environment, often employing bold colors and geometric abstraction. She married Lee Gatch at the age of thirty-seven and the couple settled down in Lambertville, New Jersey a year later. As a result of their marriage Driggs began to produce less work and faded from the art scene until her rediscovery in the early 1990s. In overall good condition. The sheet is entirely laid down to the undermat, which prevents us from inspecting the verso. The board itself is slightly warped (concave at center left). The sheet sits flat yet, with relative even edges all around. Slight abrasions along the right outer edge (covered by the mat when framed), and minor creases in the bottom right corner (which is slightly folded onto itself). Folds at center left (very minor, and most likely a result of the sheet being laid down). Overall fresh colors even though the sheet itself appears lightly toned. Otherwise no evidence of repair, loss or restoration generally speaking. To request additional information or access to more images, please contact Specialist Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com. Frame: 25 1/4 x 31 1/4 x 1 1/2 in.

Elsie B.Driggs(American, 1898-1992)White Wave, ca.1960oil on canvassigned lower right. Provenance: From the artist's estate. Biography from the archives of AskArt: Elsie Driggs, of Hartford, Connecticut, is best known as a precisionist* painter who, in the 1920s, responded to the clean, abstract beauty of the machine age in geometrically simplified compositions. Driggs studied at the Art Students League* (1919 1925), and with Maurice Sterne in Rome. Her romantic feelings about industrial forms were part of the general optimism during the booming prosperity of the 1920s. Her painting, Pittsburgh (1928), was inspired by a trip to the Jones and Laughlin steel mills, of which she said: "The particles of dust in the air seemed to catch and reflect the light to make a backdrop of luminous pale gray behind the shapes of simple smoke stack and cone. To me it was Greek." And, in fact, the critics called her series of approximately seven paintings in this mode "a new classicism". Driggs painted the Queensborough Bridge (1927) and several other works in a precisionist mode, but starting in the thirties, she turned away from this style. Her work has been shown, among other places, at the Daniel Gallery (1924 1932), and at the Rehn Gallery. For residency in the Yaddo Colony*, she received a Yaddo Foundation fellowship in 1935 and executed murals for the Federal Art Project* in the 1930s. She was the widow of artist Lee Gatch.
