    • Alexander Drobik (1890-1968), Painting, Mountain Village, 1940s
      Jan. 26, 2015

Alexander Drobik (1890-1968), Painting, Mountain Village, 1940s

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on plywood Austria, 1940s Alexander Drobik (1890-1968) - Austrian painter and graphic artist Signed lower right 'A. Drobik' In wooden frame Dimensions: 61 x 71 cm Good condition Atmospheric and typical landscape painting by Alexander Dobrik; the auction record for a large-format painting by the artist is currently set at more than €600,000 The life of Austrian painter Alexander Drobik is dominated by the Austrian mountains which also determine the subjects of his paintings. In the present work he has depicted a view of a village with sketchy loose brush strokes, behind which the foot of a mountain can be seen. The coloring in brown and muted whites, blues and greens aptly describes a wintry mood. The painting is signed lower right 'A. Drobik'. It bears minor surface soil, slight framing traces and fine cracks in the plywood surface. The overall condition is good. The frame is in good condition, too, with slight signs of wear. The painting measures 61 x 71 cm. The framed dimensions are 76 x 86 cm. Alexander Drobik (1890-1968) Alexander Drobik was born in the Silesian city of Teschen. From 1912 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Rudolf Jettmar and Alois Delug and later at the Munich Art Academy, where Eugen Felix Prosper Bracht was his teacher. During World War I he fell into Russian captivity and worked as a fresco painter in Russian churches. After escaping in 1917 Drobik worked both as a freelance painter and as a chalet landlord. From 1928 he ran a ski chalet in the Czech Republic and lived from 1934 on a mountain farm in Styria. So the motives and themes of his work are characterized by the mountains. Mountain landscapes are not only evident in his painting oeuvre, but also in a great number of etchings, woodcuts and lithographs.
