KONOVALOV, V. A Joyous Reception Awaits Our Dear Warrior, 1945

      Est: $500 - $750

Rodnomu voinu - radostnaya vstrecha [A Joyous Reception Awaits Our Dear Warrior], a poster by Viktor Konovalov (1909-1995, Meritorious Artist of the Russian Federation). Published by Iskusstvo, Moscow-Leningrad, 1945. 83.5 x 62.5 cm.It is difficult to guess from looking at this poster that Viktor Konovalov served for many years as the chief artist of the most important Soviet satirical magazine, Krokodil. A Soviet period write-up on Konovalov describes him as a respected caricaturist and poster artist, but concentrates primarily on his graphic series with titles like V.I. Lenin and Children, and October 1917 in Moscow. Konovalov’s online biography mentions that during the war he served as a commissar of a guerilla unit operating behind enemy lines, and produced frontline posters during the battle of Stalingrad. In the post-WWII years he held a number of important positions in the Artists’ Union, including Secretary and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Artists’ Union Fund, which issued the coveted ?creative travel” grants.
