Knuttel, Huize Meyendael in Deventer, 1952. -Thence by descent to the present owner, in 2002 given in long-term loan to the Legermuseum in Delft (nowadays the Nationaal Militair Museum, Soest), The dismissal of the waardgelders (mercenaries of the time) in 1618 was a historical event of crucial significance for the military authority of Maurits, Prince of Orange (1567-1625) - stadholder and military commander of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands - and left a lasting impact on politics. On the Neude square in Utrecht, the waardgelders, under the watchful eyes of Prince Maurits, his brother Frederik Hendrik, Ernest Casimir van Nassau, and Deputies of the States General, laid down their arms. Further along are officers, pikemen, musketeers and flag bearers. The background shows a topographically accurate depiction of Utrecht’s Neude, surrounded by stone and wooden stepped gable houses, the waardgelders' guardhouse, and the Cecilia Monastery. Given the great importance of this event, multiple versions were produced in the workshop of the Utrecht painter Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot, several of which are now housed in major collections, including the Koninklijke Museum voor Schone Kunsten van België, Brussels (dated 1618, inv. no. 2551), the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (dated 1625, inv. no. SK-A-606), and the Centraal Museum, Utrecht (dated 1629, inv. no. 2520). Commissions for these paintings came from noblemen, the Utrecht city council, army officers, and wealthy individuals, both domestic and foreign, who had been directly involved in the dismissal.Source, Jos Hilkhuijsen, ‘Armamentaria’, Jaarboek Legermuseum 2003-2004, pp. 311-329.

1647. Verso zwei alte Klebezettel/Etiketten mit Bez.; 60 cm x 85 cm. Rahmen. Beigefügt: Gutachten von Dr. Walter Bernt, München, 30.10.1972 (auf umseitiger Fotografie). JOOST CORNELISZ DROOCHSLOOT (Holland, 1586-1666). "Kermesse". Oil on oak panel. Cradled. Signed in the central area. Measurements: 48,5 x 64 cm. This is a work attributed to the Dutch painter Joost Cornelisz, whose productive corpus echoed the achievements of genre painting during the Dutch Golden Age. It is a theme frequently treated by the artist (a lively village view), achieving here to integrate with masterful naturalness the lively human groups in different levels of depth, through a skillful handling of lights and chromatic sieves, proportions and perspective. The houses, some of them stately, are lined up on both sides of the street to escape towards a cloudy horizon. With descriptive eagerness, peasants and bourgeois are typified, thus distinguishing their different social backgrounds. Liveliness animates gestures and gestures. Joost Cornelisz was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. It is believed that he was born in Utrecht. It is possible that he spent some years in The Hague. The documentation starts in 1616 when he was enrolled as a master in the guild of St. Luke in Utrecht, of which in 1623, 1641 and 1642 he was elected dean. A respected member of his community, in 1638 he was elected regent of the Sint Jobs hospital, deacon of the Reformed Church in 1642 and officer of the schutterij or urban militia in 1650 and 1651. In addition, from 1665 to 1666 he was a painter at the University of Utrecht. Prolific painter, the first known works, such as the Good Samaritan of the Centraal Museum of Utrecht, signed and dated 1617, in which it is clear the knowledge of the work of Jan van Scorel of the same subject, or The Seven Works of Mercy of the same museum, dated 1618, are great historical compositions of religious subject, a genre that he would never abandon (parables of the useless servant and the guest at the wedding, 1635, Centraal Museum; new version of the Seven Laws of Mercy, 1644, The Hague, Museum Bredius), but what is most repeated in his production are the urban landscapes or those located in small villages, with a wide avenue arranged diagonally and directed towards the depth, serving as a framework for the development of festive and market scenes or, more occasionally, with motifs of current events and battles. In this order, influences of the Flemish masters, both Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Pieter Brueghel the Younger, and his compatriot David Vinckboons, have been pointed out, although the finish of the works of this type of painting is not always the same as that of the Flemish masters.

STADTBEWOHNER BEOBACHTEN SOLDATEN, DIE AUS DEM STADTPLATZ VON AMERSFOORT REITEN Öl auf Leinwand. 93 x 166 cm. Provenienz: Privatsammlung Turin. Galleria Caretto, 1997. Privatsammlung, Mailand. Anmerkung: RKD (Niederländisches Büro für Kunstgeschichte) unter der Abb. Nr. 0000013330. (1402411) (10) Joost Cornelisz Droochsloot, 1586 Utrecht – 1666 ibid. TOWNSPEOPLE WATCHING SOLDIERS RIDING OUT OF THE TOWN SQUARE OF AMERSFOORT Oil on canvas. 93 x 166 cm. Monogrammed “JC DS” and dated “1637”. A cavalry regiment of well-dressed soldiers with scarlet sashes rides out of the town. Two soldiers on foot carry the supplies in a large chest, while the inhabitants, including two dogs and their mounted companions, look on in admiration. The flag of the regime is carried by the infantry in the centre. On the right-hand side of the square stands the imposing church of Sint-Joris and curved brick houses frame the square, while the old town house completes the picture in the distance. It was another eleven years before the independence of the Netherlands from Spain was recognised by the Peace of Münster in 1648 at the end of the Thirty Years' War. It is possible that our painting depicts the activities of one of the militias or the independent army in his birthplace, which was founded by Oldenbarnevelt in opposition to the Stadtholder, Prince Maurits of Nassau. However, the main disbandment in 1618 took place in Utrecht. Oldenbarnevelt was then put on trial and beheaded the following year. Droochsloot became Master of the Utrecht Guild in 1616; he was appointed Dean of the Guild in 1623 and 1644. His work consisted mainly of extensive village landscapes with poplars, kennels and soldiers, but also historical and biblical motifs. Provenance: Private Collection Turin. Galleria Caretto, 1997. JOOST CORNELISZ DROOCHSLOOT (Holland, 1586-1666). "Preaching of St. John the Baptist". 1664. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated Relined 50 years ago. Eighteenth century frame. Rear frame. Measurements: 73 x 115 cm; 84 x 125 cm (frame). In this choral scene, of remarkable workmanship, different social classes gather in the shade of a tree to listen to the word of Saint John the Baptist, who preaches the arrival of Jesus. This is an important painting by Joost Cornelisz, signed and dated by the artist. It belongs to his mature period. As Dutch painters of Cornelisz's time, such as Bartholomeus Breenbergh (his "Preaching of John the Baptist" is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York) or Brueghel the Younger in his painting of the same name of 1566, the theme of the sermon is used as an excuse to depict a crowd of varied social backgrounds and origins in order to emphasise the idea of spreading the good news beyond frontiers. Sumptuous costumes of exotic appearance coexist with the humble attire of peasants, the aristocratic classes mingle with the servants. All of them are symbolically levelled by their faith. The landscape depicted is not the typical Dutch one of wide plains, but is dotted with ruins and a landscape reminiscent of Italy. Joost Cornelisz excelled in his recreation of lively scenes set in natural landscapes. Through a skilful use of light and colour nuances, he creates a successful effect of perspective and spaciousness. In addition, each figure has been individualised, characterised in clothing and gestural language. The salmon-coloured lights fluff the clouds in the clear sky. Joost Cornelisz was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. He is thought to have been born in Utrecht. It is possible that he spent some years in The Hague. Documentation dates from 1616 when he was enrolled as a master in the guild of Saint Luke in Utrecht, of which he was elected dean in 1623, 1641 and 1642. A prolific painter, his earliest known works, such as The Good Samaritan in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, signed and dated 1617, in which his knowledge of Jan van Scorel's work on the same subject is evident, and The Seven Works of Mercy in the same museum, dated 1618, are large historical compositions on religious themes, a genre he never abandoned (Parables of the Unprofitable Servant and the Guest at the Wedding, 1635, Centraal Museum, Utrecht; The New Version of the Seven Laws of Mercy, 1644, The Hague, Museum Bredius), but what is most common in his production are urban landscapes or landscapes set in small villages, with a wide avenue arranged diagonally and directed towards the depths, serving as a setting for festive and market scenes. Influences of the Flemish masters, both Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Pieter Brueghel the Younger, have been noted.

siglato a lettere intrecciate in basso a sinistra: \JD\" \“ (…)

A respected member of his community, in 1638 he was elected regent of the Sint Jobs hospital, a deacon of the Reformed Church in 1642 and an officer in the schutterij or urban militia in 1650 and 1651. In addition, from 1665 to 1666 he was painter to the University of Utrecht.

Droochsloot thus placed himself in the tradition of 16th-century Dutch painting, especially the depictions of beggars by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The subject and composition must have enjoyed some popularity, as there are several iterations by Droochsloot in his own hand, among others in the Antwerp Museum voor Schone Kunsten, the Utrecht Centraal Museum and the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig.

(Utrecht 1585–1666) A village kermesse with people eating and drinking outside and children fighting on the ground, monogrammed and dated on the tavern shield, on the left: JCDS. 1647, oil on panel, 75.5 x 106.5 cm, framed Provenance: Private European collection The present painting shows a rural kermesse scene, a recurrent motif in the oeuvre of the Dutch painter Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot. The composition gives a view of a wide road leading away from the spectators in a gentle curve. The street is lined with small houses on both sides, a church with a festive banner is visible in the background. All along the road, people animate the scene and give it a festive character. The figures depicted can be observed in various activities: eating and drinking at a table put up in front of an inn and conversing, children are fighting in the foreground. The compositional scheme of the road meeting a low horizon under a wide sky can be found in numerous paintings by the Dutch artist. The dark house on the left side that emphasises the illusion of depth is also a recurrent feature of Droochsloot’s village scenes. Different shades of brown dominate this representation of rural life, only few accents of colour, especially in the figure’s clothing, enliven the scene. The dominating muted tones of the village contrast with the bright sky, on which clouds are softly illuminated by the sun. Only little is known about the early life of Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot, however, in 1616 he is reported as a member of the Utrecht Guild of St. Luke. A successful painter, he became dean of the guild in 1623 and in 1641/42. While his earlier works represent generally historical or biblical subjects, he later goes on to depict mostly genre scenes, such as the present painting, dated to 1647.
