              An antique copper raised relief plaque by Henry Dropsy. A figural landscape scene with human figures, one with eyes upraised and hands in prayer, with animals and other forms. After the original painting, "Saint Genevieve as a Child at Prayer," painted for the Pantheon (Paris), by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898), the original produced 1874 to 1878. Préface sur l'art de la médaille, pour l'exposition du sculpteur et médailleur Henri Dropsy (1885-1969) en mai-juin 1932.« L'Art de la Médaille est de tous les arts celui qui peut le moins se passer de style. Il ne dispose pas de ces agréments de surcroît qui, sans remplacer le style, en masquent souvent l'absence : je veux dire la couleur des peintres ou la variété des profils statuaires. La médaille n'a rien de tout cela : elle se présente nue, telle qu'elle est, sans décor ni cadre, comme un petit objet précieux qu'on tient sous le regard dans le creux de la main. Le style est un système de subordination : il souligne l'essentiel de la forme et l'essentiel de la pensée. Le style est affirmatif et clair. Le style est fait de sacrifices, j'allais dire de contraintes, ou plutôt il est la victoire de l'esprit sur la contrainte. À défaut du style, il faut à la médaille la stylisation qui n'est qu'un artifice, une ruse, une contrefaçon »... Denis évoque l'art des Grecs, chez qui Dropsy, « comme Antoine Bourdelle, s'est cherché des modèles et des maîtres. [...] L'effort qu'il poursuit depuis vingt ans pour s'évader de la stylisation et atteindre au vrai style, mérite d'être proposé en exemple. [...] Dropsy est sculpteur : la médaille pour lui est un bas-relief. Il renouvelle l'invention de Pisanello lorsqu'il improvisa le portrait du Paléologue, et l'initiative de Ponscarme lorsqu'il modela le portrait de Naudet. Des formes de peu de saillies, mais qui sont puissantes et souples, des contours affirmés sans sécheresse, des accents volontaires : tels sont les éléments d'un art qui donne de la grandeur et de la vie à ces minuscules bas-reliefs de métal »... Etc. 31 octobre 1933. Il commence à aller mieux mais a été « très secoué moralement » par cette année dure. « Et je me suis beaucoup fatigué à Vienne sur le Rhône, où j'ai fait une grande abside dont les gens de là-bas sont enthousiastes »...Le manuscrit et la lettre sont montés sur onglets en tête du livre de Maurice Denis, Théories 1890 1910. Du Symbolisme et de Gauguin vers un nouvel ordre classique (4e éd., Paris, L. Rouart et J. Watelin, 1920 ; in-8, rel. demi-toile marron), avec envoi autographe signé « à Dropsy son ami, son admirateur heureux de l'élection du meilleur médailleur de notre temps à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts. Maurice Denis 21 janvier 1942 », sous lequel on a monté une photographie de Denis sur son lit de mort.On joint un tapuscrit : Allocution de M. Maurice Denis recevant M. Dropsy, et 2 catalogues d'exposition : L'École de Pont-Aven et les Nabis 1888-1908 (Galerie Parvillée 1943), et Exposition Maurice Denis (Musée d'Art Moderne 1945).
