Leonidas Drosis, Bust of a Woman, Marble, Greece, Late 19th C.

      Est: €1,500 - €1,950

Marble, metal Greece, late 19th century Leonidas Drosis (1834-1882) – One of the most important Greek sculptors of the 19th century Incised signature ‘Α ΔΡΟΣΗΣ‘, above that further illegible inscription Delicately worked portrait bust of a young woman Round base consisting of torus and trochilus, above that polygonal part Holes for mounting and metal rod for fixation of bust onto base Total height: 37.5 cm Good condition, consistent with age Classicist, antique-like portrait bust of a young woman, presumably Penelope Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 3,000 Euro This rather delicate and highly detailed crafted portrait bust of a beautiful woman is of antique-like design. In accordance with ancient fashion, the draped robe is pinned to the left shoulder with two brooches. The young Greek or Roman woman probably originates from a wealthier class. This is also emphasized by her rich headdress - consisting of diadem and hair bands - under which her hair is artfully arranged. It is possible that this is a representation of the princess of Greek mythology Penelope. The surface is processed smoothly and the result is a sense of delicacy, which is enhanced by the gentle face of the woman. Condition: Portrait bust and base are in good condition, consistent with age. Edges and surfaces are partially rubbed, scratched as well as minimally bumped. Below the left shoulder, at the cheekbone, there is a barely visible crack. The total height measures 37.5 cm. Leonidas Drosis (1843-1882) After his birth in 1834 in Tripoli or Nafplion, Drosis spent the rest of his childhood in Athens. In 1847 he began to study at Athens’ Polytechnic Institute, later he entered the Academy, which he continued until 1855. One of his teachers was Christian Heinrich Siegel, who soon discovered his talent and supported him. Thus Drosis was able to present the bust of Andreas Maoulis as early as 1855 at the Paris World Exhibition. From 1857-61 he continued his studies in Munich. Following this, he began to travel, visiting Vienna, Dresden, Paris, London and Rome. In Rome he opened his own studio and learned style and technique of classicism. In 1868 he returned to Athens, where he taught sculpture at the Polytechnic Institute and also owned a large workshop. His works were often awarded with prizes, e.g. in 1870 with the Gold Medal at the 2nd Athens Olympics or in 1873 with the Medal for Art at the World Exhibition in Vienna. With his works and due to his teaching activity, Drosis had a major impact on an entire generation of painters and sculptors, for example on Georgios Vroutos, Lazaros Socho and Giannoulis Chalepas.
