Biographie : Jacques Félix DUBAN, né à Paris le 14 octobre 1797, et mort à Bordeaux le 8 octobre 1870, est un architecte français. Avec Jacques Hittorff et Henri Labrouste, il fut le chef incontesté de la nouvelle génération romantique. Il est l’élève de son futur beau-frère François Debret. Lauréat du grand prix de Rome en 1823, il est profondément marqué par son séjour en Italie. Il y découvrit notamment la polychromie des peintures antiques de Pompéi, les tombeaux étrusques nouvellement mis au jour, ainsi que la tradition des grands décors peints de la Renaissance. À la faveur de la révolution de 1830, il devint l’architecte de l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. Il est élu membre de l’Académie des beaux-arts en 1854. Félix Duban est un remarquable coloriste et un grand connaisseur de l’architecture gréco-romaine et des ordres architecturaux. Il est promu au grade de commandeur de la Légion d’honneur par décret du 14 août 1868. Parmi ses réalisations, nous pouvons citer : - L’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris - Restauration du château de Blois - Restauration de la galerie d’Apollon du palais du Louvre, à partir de 1848. - Conception de la nouvelle décoration du Salon carré au palais du Louvre (1849-1851). - Restauration de la Sainte-Chapelle, avec Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus et Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. - Restauration de divers monuments historiques et monuments privés, notamment le château de Dampierre pour le duc de Luynes. Historique du projet de construction du tombeau de l’Empereur Napoléon 1er : Avant de parvenir au monument que nous connaissons et qui se trouve aujourd’hui sous le Dôme de la cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides à Paris, beaucoup d’eau a coulé sous les ponts (de la Seine). Entre l’arrivée des Cendres et le déplacement du cercueil vers le tombeau, le 2 avril 1861, il faut attendre plus de vingt ans. Entre temps, le cercueil est placé dans la chapelle Saint-Jérôme, dans une sorte de chapelle ardente. Dès l’année suivant le retour de la dépouille de Napoléon, un concours national est lancé pour désigner l’architecte qui recevra l’honneur d’imaginer et de superviser la construction du tombeau de l’ancien empereur. Quatre-vingts projets sont présentés et, finalement, c’est à l’architecte Louis-Tullius Visconti (1791-1853) que le gouvernement confie la tâche de construire le tombeau et la crypte qui l’accueillera. L’artiste n’est pas étranger au lieu et au projet puisqu’il a réalisé les décors pour la cérémonie parisienne du retour des Cendres. Cet ancien élève de l’architecte de Napoléon Ier et Joséphine, Charles Percier (1764-1838), est également à l’origine de l’agrandissement du palais du Luxembourg. Il est proche du pouvoir et du roi Louis-Philippe. Par la suite, sous le Second Empire, Napoléon III le nomme architecte du château des Tuileries, qu’il doit réunir au palais du Louvre. Le projet sur les Tuileries et le tombeau de Napoléon demeurent ses deux plus grandes réalisations Pour édifier son projet, dix-huit années de travaux sont nécessaires. Visconti n’assistera donc pas au déplacement du cercueil de Napoléon vers le tombeau. À sa mort, les travaux sont repris par Jules-Frédéric Bouchet (1799-1860), puis par Alphonse-Nicolas Crépinet (1826-1892). À l’intérieur du sarcophage, Napoléon repose en habit de colonel de chasseur à cheval de la Garde Impériale dans un cercueil, lui-même inséré dans d’autres cercueils successifs faits de différents matériaux : fer-blanc, acajou, deux en plomb, ébène.

Slightly stained and dirty in places on the edge of the sheet. The corners partly creased and bumped (restored). Along the upper edge of the sheet and at lower right some restored tears. The image makes a very good overall impression. Description: On the Italian journeys of European artists and scholars as well as the cavalier tours of the nobility, Pompeii was an obligatory destination since the middle of the 18th century. Nowhere else was the life of antiquity as well as architecture and art treasures from the time of the Roman Empire as vividly studied as in Pompeii. The ancient city was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and was only rediscovered in 1748. At first it was haunted by rather predatory collectors of antiquities, but only after the courageous intervention of Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) with the demands of young science of archaeology and art history the city was recorded and systematically excavated. A truly methodical excavation in the modern sense was not introduced until the 19th century. Until Giuseppe Fiorelli (1823-1896) took over the direction of the excavation, art treasures and even wall paintings were in part roughly removed in order to exhibit them in museums and royal collections. 1   Only through the inclusion of the wall paintings by travelling artists and architects is the overall context still recognisable today and the form of the elaborate wall decorations preserved. Also the French architect and early representative of Historicism Jacques Félix Duban, after he had received the scholarship Prix de Rome of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture for a stay in the Villa Medici in Rome at the age of 26, made trips to Campania to study the architecture and painting of Pompeii. The drawing of a wall in the Casa di Championnet is in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Our copy is similar to this unfinished watercolour in every detail, except that the decoration of the wall is finished and drawn. The depiction of small figures, such as the winged genii, in bright areas framed by arabesques is typical of the so-called 4th Pompeian style or Fantasy style. This style is considered to be the youngest of the four decoration systems of Roman wall painting and probably did not spread in Pompeii until around 60 AD. When the city was buried, the painting probably was still relatively young and probably Duban presented itself in a good state of preservation. 2     1Kraus 1977, p. 12f.   2Kraus 1977, p. 203-209.
