Guy Pène DuBois Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1884 - d. 1958

(b Brooklyn, NY, 1884; d 1958) American Painter. Guy Pène du Bois is recognized for his exceptional approach to representing life in New York City. Rather than focusing on the gritty side of urban life, as did many of his peers, Guy Pène du Bois instead chose to concentrate on the metropolitan sophisticates of New York and Paris and the pretensions and conventions that accompanied their social standing. Pène du Bois' development as an ardent social observer began while he was studying under Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. Henri, a passionate realist, urged his students to take the people that surrounded them as subjects and to attempt to capture their essence. In 1905, Pène du Bois traveled to Paris, where he remained until 1908, spending the majority of his time surveying the crowds at various establishments and scrutinizing social relationships. His works during this time reflected the influence of Daumier and Toulouse-Lautrec. Upon his return to New York, the artist worked as a newspaper reporter, which provided continual occasion for social observation in a multitude of situations. Although he quickly transitioned to art criticism, the initial experience of covering the beat provided the artist with a plethora of subject matter. He returned to live in France from 1924 until 1930.* Upon returning to America, du Bois continued creating portraits of bourgeois culture as well as landscapes, until the decline of his health in the 1950s. Provenance: Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers, Milford, CT, May 4, 2006, lot 242; Collection of Allison Kendrick, The Carroll-Crawford House, New Orleans; Neal Auction, Nov. 20, 2021, lot 489. Note: A keen observer of class dynamics, Guy Pène du Bois built a successful artistic career documenting the bourgeois lives of the Parisians and Americans he encountered throughout his lifetime. Born to Louisiana writer and journalist, Henri Pène du Bois, Guy inherited his father’s enthusiasm for the French language and culture. In 1905, after spending his early career studying under Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase and alongside fellow students George Bellows and Edward Hopper, he traveled to Paris with his father where his work was exhibited in the Paris Salon for the first time that same year. Due to his father falling ill, he was forced to return to New York in 1906. There, he would go on to become an art critic for the New York Tribune and remain involved in the local art scene, even helping to organize the 1913 Armory Show, which included several of his works. Du Bois would return to Paris in 1924 for a few years to focus on painting, before settling in New York once again to teach at his own art school and the Art Students League in New York. While he was known primarily as a satirist of social scenes, du Bois’ painting on offer here is a rare and tender still life. The pink, white and red tones of the flowers glow against the saturated blue background, and the artist’s expert and effortless brushwork is demonstrated in the shading of the vase and the petals of the flowers. Painted later in his life, this 1948 composition is a haunting example of du Bois’ mature talent. Ref.: Torchia, Robert. “Guy Pène du Bois”. National Gallery of Art. Aug. 17, 2018. www.nga.gov. Guy Pène Du Bois (American, 1884-1958) - Portrait of Mary Lightfoot Tarleton Knollenberg

        Est: $50,000 - $80,000

Guy Pène Du Bois (American, 1884-1958) - Portrait of Mary Lightfoot Tarleton Knollenberg Signed and dated ‘Guy Pène du Bois/’35' bottom right, oil on canvas 36 x 29 in. (91.4 x 73.7cm) Provenance Collection of Mary Lightfoot Tarleton Knollenberg, the Sitter. By descent in the Knollenberg family. Private Collection, North Carolina. Lot Essay Mary Tarleton Knollenberg (1904-1992) was an American sculptor who worked primarily in bronze, stone and plaster. Her artwork focused on the human form, essentially female nudes which she would elegantly simplify by adopting the “direct carving” technique that Heinz Warneke–one of her teachers at East Haddam–had taught her.  Originally from Long Island, Tarleton grew up in prosperity on her father's–a prominent lawyer–thirty-two-acre estate. When her parents divorced, she followed her mother to Montclair, New Jersey where she graduated from an all girls' high school. In the fall of 1922, she enrolled in Mahonri Young's class at the American School of Sculpture. Two years later, at age 21, she followed him to Paris along with fellow female student, Hester Bancroft. She financed her trip partially through the sale of three horse sculptures, her first original work which Young thoroughly encouraged and promoted. While in Paris, she enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and studied under Émile Antoine Bourdelle. She would return to Paris on a Guggenheim fellowship in 1933 and in 1934. Mahonri Young proved to be a decisive mentor for Tarleton, who confessed: “He believed in me (…) He became everything to me–teacher, lover, father.” After several years of relationship, the pair eventually split, Mary later recalling “I told him I wanted to be free to go my own way and would not continue our relationship as before." Yet, Young remained a loyal and helpful patron; during her convalescence in 1928, he kept her career alive by supervising the casting of several of her pieces in New York, sending her materials and words of encouragement. Tarleton would later reminisce: “All through this Hon had been a faithful friend and supporter, coming often to see me at the hospital, coming out to Great Neck etc. I certainly needed him then, and all during the two years spent in Shepherdstown, my correspondence with him was one of the main things that kept up my heart and courage." Tarleton would eventually meet and marry a man twelve years her senior, Bernhard Knollenberg, a noted New York lawyer and respected historian on George Washington. As he was also a librarian at New Haven’s Sterling Memorial Library, Knollenberg helped Mary exhibit her work at Yale University. Married for 35 years, they lived together in Chester, Connecticut, where Tarleton died on December 21, 1992, age 88. Today, her sculpted portrait of Reginald Marsh is on display at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and a marble bust of Lincoln Kirstein is on permanent display at the New York City Ballet in Lincoln Center. The present painting was executed by Guy Pène du Bois in the mid-1930s, before Tarleton would meet her husband. Mary and Guy were romantically involved for several years, and their correspondence attesting to it is in the National Archives Museum. In her portrait, Tarleton appears a strong, tall and strikingly beautiful blonde. Her nonchalant pose, as well as her fierce gaze, which is turned away from the viewer, speaks to her strong will and temper. Nothing in the portrait alludes to her status as a sculptor; there is no bust in sight, no studio nor a working blouse. Instead, she stands as a modern woman, freed from any characterization and utterly independent.  The present work is characteristic of Pène du Bois' style from the 1930s, following his return from Paris to the United States. At the time, the artist had started a teaching position at the Arts Students League, and began painting more portraits of women, often posing alone in a chair, their face either concealed or falsely modest. Here, the work exhibits a very sculptural form, brighter colors as well as loose brushwork. Still, it contains an air of mystery and tension that usually imbue Pène du Bois' figure portraits, and which here speak to the difficult relationship between the artist and his model, who decided to call off their affair before the portrait was finished.

Lot Essay While an important figure in the annals of American Art, Guy Pène du Bois defies easy categorization; as an artist, he mixed a realistic approach with modern stylization, but as a critic, he was acutely aware of the numerous aesthetic movements at play in the 1930s. Executed two years after the artist returned to America from France, the present work embodies this duality.  In Teddy at the Typewriter, Pène du Bois presents us with an elegant, fair-haired young woman dressed in a blue floral dress typing pages at a table. Behind her, a stack of staggered books rests upon the mantel. Despite the cheerful, rose-toned palette, the scene is disconcerting, which is not surprising given Pène du Bois’s ("a clever satirist" according to Duncan Phillips) often sardonic portrayals of the New York Elite. While the present work could depict a strong, independent woman focused on her task at hand, the slightly skewed perspective, especially noticeable in the table that leans towards us, could also indicate the uneasy presence of a spectator. The male gaze, which physically and metaphorically looks down on the subject, may explain the woman's closed expression and frozen pose. Pène du Bois therefore places the viewer in the uncomfortable role of voyeur–a quiet and possibly unwelcome observer who disrupts the woman’s solitude and productivity.
