Jean Dubuffet Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1901 - d. 1985

Jean Dubuffet was born into a bourgeois family of wine merchants in the port of Le Havre in 1901. He studied painting in Paris in 1918 and met key figures in the Parisian art scene of the 1920s, such as Juan Gris and Fernand Léger. By 1924, however, Dubuffet had become disillusioned with painting, and he gave it up for eight years. After running his own wine business, he took up painting again in the mid-1930s, only to quickly abandon it once more. Only in 1942 did he finally settle into the life of an artist.

Signed and dated 'J. Dubuffet 54'. We would like to thank Fondation Jean Dubuffet, Paris, for helpful information. Jean Dubuffet’s works are unparalleled in the art historical canon of the 20th century. He deliberately distanced himself from current art discourses and categorisations. Dubuffet describes this as follows: ‘Seek out worlds of the spirit with your thinking and your senses that have nothing to do with “culture”. If what you want to do is to be effective, it must contradict all principles of “order”: it should always be badly done, like a clumsy dance, but one that is full of life, full of real, undisguised life. Try to break up your thinking because it is part of the “culture” you want to escape as it poisons itself. And finally, make sure that the other reality that you want to point out and ultimately realise always remains your very own thing.’ (Jean Dubuffet in:Jörn Merkert, Aus einer anderen Welt, Zum Werk von Jean Dubuffet, in: exhib.cat. Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna, Josef-Haubrich-Kunsthalle, Cologne, Dubuffet Retrospektive, Berlin 1980 p.11). The artistic work of children, the mentally ill, and primitive peoples, which is intuitive and, above all, free from cultural inscriptions, was always a testing guide for him. For Dubuffet, isolation was not an end in itself, but rather a necessity. It is deliberately used to expose something fundamental. His pictorial themes on the other hand, are in the tradition of Western painting; the human image, natural and urban landscapes, as well as the classic still life – they serve as an anchor point for the viewer. Dubuffet combines the two former in his work ‘Scène à la campagne’ from 1954 in a unique way. For Dubuffet, it was never about the depiction of something concrete, he rather also strove to visualise the universal in the choice of his themes and their deformation.

Olivier Bleistift auf Skizzenblockpapier. 1955. 31,3 x 23,8 cm. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
