Jean Dubuffet Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1901 - d. 1985

Jean Dubuffet was born into a bourgeois family of wine merchants in the port of Le Havre in 1901. He studied painting in Paris in 1918 and met key figures in the Parisian art scene of the 1920s, such as Juan Gris and Fernand Léger. By 1924, however, Dubuffet had become disillusioned with painting, and he gave it up for eight years. After running his own wine business, he took up painting again in the mid-1930s, only to quickly abandon it once more. Only in 1942 did he finally settle into the life of an artist.

    Est: -

1960 | profession: Painter | country: France | signature: Original signature | size: 310 x 260 mm (size of the pad) | technique: Typewritten letter Lot information Typewritten letter dated November 7, 1960, addressed to Czechoslovak professor Vladimír Palkovský. In the letter, Jean Dubuffet responds to previous correspondence, apologizing for a lost letter. He assumes that the recipient wishes to receive a lithograph, which he offers. Dubuffet mentions that he is currently in Vence (near Nice, in southern France), where he is fully engaged in his painting work and does not have any lithographs or documents with him. He informs the recipient about his lithographic workshop in Paris, where numerous plates he created in previous years are currently being printed in his absence. He describes this as a large series of lithographs, in both black and color variations, on the theme Phénomènes. These unique lithographs are intended for Galerie Berggruen at 70 rue de l'Université, Paris 7°, and for a small book about this series of plates. Dubuffet also writes to his secretary in Paris, Miss Janine Colas (114 Bis Rue de Vaugirard, Paris 6°), requesting that she send one of the lithographs to the recipient. He asks Palkovský to contact her directly. Hand-signed in ink: Jean Dubuffet.
