    Aug. 07, 2024

Edmund Dulac Signed & Inscribed Print Based on "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" Illustration

    Est: $300 - $400

Edmund Dulac n.p., n.d. Edmund Dulac Signed & Inscribed Print Based on "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" Illustration Signed print A print after book illustrator Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), signed and inscribed by the artist on the decorative paper mount as "To a dream Castle / Edmund Dulac" at lower right. N.d., n.p. The high-quality glossy image is hinged at the top of the mat. Expected wear including even toning. A negligible scuff affects the center of the image, and there is a tiny closed tear along the mat's right edge. Pencil inscriptions and mat burn verso. Else near fine. The actual size of the image is 5.125" x 7.125" while the overall size of the mat is 8.5" x 10.875." Dulac's original illustrations in pen, ink, watercolor, and gouache sell at auction in the six-figure range. This signed and inscribed, aesthetically pleasing, and ready-to-frame print is an affordable alternative! The dream-like image shows a glimmering forest temple partially revealed under sparkling starlight. It is a reproduction of one of the 20 illustrations Dulac completed for an illustrated edition of Edward FitzGerald, trans., "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1909). Dulac's scene was inspired by Verse 20 of the "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," translated as follows: "The Palace that to Heav'n his pillars threw, And Kings the forehead on his threshold drew I saw the solitary Ringdove there, And 'Coo, coo, coo,' she cried; and 'Coo, coo, coo.'" English author Edward FitzGerald had first published an English translation of the semi-mystical poetry of the 11th century Persian poet Omar Khayyam in 1859. Dulac contracted with Hodder & Stoddard during the period 1907-1913 to produce a series of illustrations for classic works by Shakespeare, Poe, Andersen, and others. The lavishly illustrated gift editions were profitable and secured Dulac's reputation as a book illustrator. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
