James D. Duncan, Oil On Board, circa 1840

    Est: $200 - $400

Featured in this lot is a portrait of James D. Duncan, Oil On Board, circa 1840. Painter, lithographer, and teacher of drawing was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland and after having received some artistic training,in 1825 he immigrated to Lower Canada, and by 1830 was established in Montreal as a professional artist and teacher of drawing. Numerous views in oil, gouache, and water-colour of Montreal life and scenery, presenting landscape and enlivened with the anecdote of genre painting, established Duncan as a recorder par excellence of that city over several decades. Duncan’s early water-colours were influenced by the British tradition in water-colours. Duncan was one of Canada’s first lithographic draughtsmen; he again looked to both Montreal and Quebec for his subject-matter. In 1847 he published a Panoramic view of Montreal, which was engraved by W. S. Barnard. A set of six views of Montreal was drawn on stone by Duncan and published in 1849 in Montreal. In these works Duncan reveals the same pictorial organization and concerns as in his watercolour views. In his career and his works he is the epitome of the successful mid-19th-century Canadian artist. This portrait of Duncan is in good overall condition, minor chipping and crazing exhibited. Measures9.75"W x 12"L approximately.

The following passage is from McCord’s description:This view looks east from the western slopes of Mount Royal towards the city and St. Helen's Island. James Duncan’s watercolour was painted from the garden of Temple Grove, the home of the McCord family. A horse-drawn carriage can be seen travelling along the Côte-des-Neiges Road. The row of lombardy poplars on the right marks the boundary of the Priest's Farm, which eventually became the site of the Grand Séminaire. To the left of the trees, lined with a row of while buildings, is Sherbrooke Street, which became one of the most fashionable thoroughfares in Montreal during the second half of the nineteenth century. The developments that can be seen spreading towards the west provide clear evidence of the extent of the city's growth by this period.Estimate: $600—800
