    B. DUNKER (1746-1807), 3 riders in the lane., Etching

    Est: €120 - €200

Balthasar Anton Dunker (1746 Hall near Stralsund - 1807 Bern): Historical equestrian group in the city alley, 18th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Lower middle numbered in the printing plate: "CHAP. CCCCXXV.". Date: 18th century Description: The artwork shows a historical street scene in which three gentlemen in black robes ride on horseback through a narrow alley towards a square with an equestrian statue. The riders are depicted as figures on their backs, which inevitably draws the viewer's attention to the horses' particularly powerful and detailed rumps. This overemphasised depiction could be a subtle satirical allusion to power, authority or the self-satisfied appearance of the riders, breaking their solemn seriousness with subtle irony. Keywords: Street scene; rider; architecture; alleys; city; historical depiction; horses; movement; perspective; tension; dynamics; tradition; history; urban; figures; artwork; engraving; nostalgic; urban space;, 18th century, Rococo, Genre, France, Horse Size: Paper: 19,3 cm x 12,6 cm (7,6 x 5 in), Depiction: 11,2 cm x 6,4 cm (4,4 x 2,5 in)

Date: 18th century Description: In an opulently decorated interior scene, an elegantly dressed man abruptly tears the wig off his counterpart's head, while the latter reacts with a surprised, defensive stance. Est: €75 - €125

Balthasar Anton Dunker (1746 Hall near Stralsund - 1807 Bern): Whore is threatened by a man in front of a house in Paris, 18th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Lower middle numbered in the printing plate: "CHAP XLII". Date: 18th century Description: The etching shows a gloomy street scene in Paris, probably from the late 18th century. A lavishly dressed woman, possibly a prostitute, is being threatened in the courtyard by a cold-blooded-looking man with a hat, wide boots and a dagger in his hand. Above the door hangs a sign reading "Au St. Esprit", which ironically refers to peace and spiritual purity - a contrast to the menacing mood of the scene. B. DUNKER (1746-1807), Revolutionary scene in Paris, Etching

    Est: €75 - €125

Balthasar Anton Dunker (1746 Hall near Stralsund - 1807 Bern): "A Neuf Heures Du Matin", street scene during the French Revolution, 18th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "a Neuf heures du matin". Lower middle numbered in the printing plate: "CHAP. CCCXXX.". Date: 18th century Description: This fine etching shows a dynamic street scene, probably from Paris at the time of the French Revolution. A man on horseback is being harassed by the crowd in the midst of a riot, while someone rips his hat off his head - a gesture that can be interpreted as symbolising the loss of power by the nobility or an authority figure. The architecture, with the ornate house façade and a lantern in the background, suggests an urban setting, possibly Paris during the revolutionary upheavals. Keywords: French Revolution; Paris; street riot; seizure of power; nobility; horsemen; crowd; political symbolism; historical etching; overthrow; 18; century;, 18th century, Realism, History, France, Horse Size: Paper: 17,6 cm x 12,4 cm (6,9 x 4,9 in), Depiction: 11,3 cm x 6,7 cm (4,4 x 2,6 in)
