Consequently, numerous views of the city survive from this period of his career, including his Panoramic view of the Bay of Naples, National Gallery, London, and two examples in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.1 The present canvas, signed and dated 1810, was likely painted at the beginning of this Italian sojourn, but perhaps before Dunouy had travelled that far south. Although none of the compositional elements can be identified as Neapolitan, the sun-bathed building on the right is certainly Italianate in its architecture.1 Inv. no. IFF, aus 1. -- -- Der Pariser Landschaftsmaler und Radierer Alexandre Hyacinthe Dunouy debütierte 1781 mit einer Landschaft auf dem Salon de la Jeunesse und beschickte die Salons 1791 bis 1833. Dunouy war ein Schützling des Joachim Murat, der unter Napoleon von 1808-1815 als König von Neapel eingesetzt war. Hier fand Dunouy die Inspiration zu seinen Landschaftsgemälden, die vorwiegend Motive aus der Gegend um Neapel und aus dem Apennin wiedergeben. Die vorliegende Folge ist wohl Teil einer größeren Landschaftsfolge von zwölf Blatt. Anregungen durch die Radierkunst niederländischer Italianisten des 17. Jahrhunderts verbinden sich mit einer klassizistischen Landschaftsauffassung à la Nicolas Poussin und Gaspar Dughet. - Ausgezeichnete, kontrastreiche Drucke mit feinem Rändchen um die Plattenkante, Blatt 6 der Folge etwas leichter in der Druckhaltung. Der in Paris geborene Alexandre Hyacinthe Dunouy zählte zu den geschätzten Kleinmeistern im späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert in Frankreich. Er spezialisierte sich vorwiegend auf Ansichten der Region rund um Paris, der Auvergne, den Savoyen und der Umgebung von Lyon. 1791 stellte er seine Arbeiten erstmals am Salon aus, wodurch das Interesse zahlreicher Kunstliebhaber geweckt wurde. Unter der Schirmherrschaft des napoleonischen Generals Joachim Murat reiste Dunouy 1810 nach Italien, wo er zahlreiche Ansichten Roms und Neapels künstlerisch festhielt. Seine meist kleinformatigen und dekorativen Gemälde, erfüllt vom Geist des späten 18. Jahrhunderts, zeichnen sich durch präzise Details und eine helle und leuchtende Farbpalette aus. Dies zeigt sich auch in den beiden vorliegenden Kompositionen, die zum Verweilen einladen (Los 3165 und 3166).

(Parigi, 1757 - 1841) Veduta di Castel Sant'Elia nella Tuscia Olio su tela, cm 38,5X46,5 Dunouy iniziì la sua carriera dipingendo panorami di Parigi e la sua prima esposizione risale al 1781. Dipinse tele con paesaggi nei dintorni di Roma e Napoli durante i suoi due soggiorni di cui il primo intorno al 1780. Di lui è noto il viaggiì che svolse tra il 1813 e il 1814 con il patrocinio di Gioacchino Murat e a questo periodo si collocano le vedute napoletane. La tela in esame si dovrebbe collocare a questo momento e la veduta fu più volte affrontata dall'artista (cfr. Sotheby's Parigi 19/11/2019, n. 46, erroneamente indicata come veduta di Tivoli).

Notre tableau traduit les sentiments d'un artiste à la carrière brillante qui n'a plus à démontrer sa virtuosité dans d'ambitieuses compositions inspirées de ses séjours en Italie. Cette douce vallée est l'œuvre sensible d'un artiste mûr, une image confidentielle et privée, loin des grandes commandes officielles. Alexandre-Hyacinthe Dunouy appartient à la première génération des peintres de paysages néo-classiques avec Valenciennes, Michallon, Bertin ou Bidault. Il est comme eux l'héritier du paysagisme classique de Poussin. Parcourant l'Italie de 1787 à 1790, il expose à son retour à Paris au Salon de 1791 divers paysages de la péninsule. Au service du prince Murat et de son épouse Caroline, sœur de l'Empereur, entre 1810 et 1815, il peint de nombreuses vues de Naples et de ses environs. Sous la Restauration il continue à exposer régulièrement au Salon et réalise de grands décors à Trianon en collaboration avec Bertin et Bidault. Daté de 1825, notre paysage représente probablement la vallée de la Seine, proche de Jouy-en-Josas où l'artiste s'installe à partir de 1823. Le traitement atmosphérique de notre toile, à la fois lumineux et doux, traduit l'influence du peintre Simon Denis, lui-aussi présent à la cour de Naples lors du séjour de Dunouy, et adapte à l'Ile-de-France les leçons de ses séjours italiens.
