Oil on canvas, unsigned, with label from Henry Graves, London. 50 x 40 in., 57 x 47 in. (frame). Note: Once thought to be by Thomas Gainsborough, this portrait was attributed to Gainsborough Dupont from photographs in 1981 by Sir Ellis Waterhouse. He also notes that the original Gainsborough portrait of William Pitt is in the collection of the Art Gallery of Havana, bequeathed by Oscar Cintas. Dupont painted another portrait of Pitt which was offered at auction at Christie's, NY, 25 May 1999, Lot 83.  Literature: J. Holland Rose, Litt. Est: £4,000 - £6,000

GAINSBOROUGH DUPONT (SUDBURY 1754-1797 LONDON) Portrait of Prince Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn (1745-1790) oil on canvas 29 7/8 x 24 3/4 in. (75.9 x 62.9 cm.) PROVENANCE: Leverhulme Sale; Anderson, New York, 17-19 February 1926, lot 104, as Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. with Newhouse Galleries Inc, New York, from whom acquired in April 1958 by a member of family of, Property from an Estate; Sotheby's, New York, 27 May 2004, lot 2004 (unsold). Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, New York, Private Treaty, 27 June 2006, lot 153. The Forbes Collection at Battersea House; Lyon & Turnbull, 1 November 2011, lot 141. Prince Henry Frederick, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn was the sixth child of Frederick, Prince of Wales (son of George II) and his wife Princess Augusta. The Prince began a naval career in 1768 reaching the rank of Admiral in 1778, although he was forbidden from assuming command. He is also credited with founding the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1775. The club continues to operate and to acknowledge its alternative, original, name: the “Cumberland Fleet”, after Prince Henry Frederick. The Prince’s romantic relationships gave rise to notable scandal within and beyond his own lifetime. In 1767 a secret ceremony of marriage allegedly took place between the Prince and commoner Olivia Payne. Two years later, he was obliged to pay the sum of ten thousand pounds to Lord Grosvenor after a lawsuit regarding his notorious affair with Lady Grosvenor. In 1771 Prince Henry Frederick was officially married to Anne Horton; however, the daughter of an Irish peer, his wife fell short of what King George III deemed a suitable match for his brother. The Royal Marriages Act of 1772 is said to have come about as direct result of George III’s disapproval at his brother’s marriage to a commoner. Prince Henry Frederick died in 1790. Years later, in 1817, the landscape painter and novelist Olivia Serres began making claims to George III that she was the natural daughter of his brother the Prince and his alleged first wife Olivia Payne. Although no credence was ever officially given to this claim, Olivia Serres later assumed the controversial title, “Princess of Cumberland”.

Thomas Gainsborough R.A. (British, 1727-1788), "Portrait of Gainsborough Dupont "

    Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (British, 1727-1788) "Portrait of Gainsborough Dupont (1754-1797), the Artist's Nephew", ca. 1772-74 oil on canvas unsigned. Antique giltwood frame with oval aperture. 25" x 20", framed 30" x 25" Provenance: Mrs. S. E. Browne by 1856; bequeathed by Miss Emily Sarah Browne, High Wycombe to Mansfield College, Oxford, 1906; Christie's, January 29, 1954, lot 128; Newhouse Galleries, New York; Private collection, Chicago; Fine Arts Gallery, New Orleans, 1984; Estate of Dr. Carroll Ball, Jackson, Mississippi. Literature: To be included in Hugh Belsey's upcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's portraits. Notes: The most interesting member of Gainsborough's family is one of whom curiously little is known: I mean his sister's son, Gainsborough Dupont... He seems to have become a member of the Gainsborough household at an early age... He made good use, however, of his uncle's tuition... Walter Armstrong Gainsborough Dupont, the eldest son of Thomas Gainsborough's sister, entered his uncle's studio in 1772, remaining there until the elder artist's death in 1788. He was, somewhat surprisingly for the time and for an artist of Gainsborough's caliber and reputation, the only assistant accepted by the elder man. While Dupont did briefly attend the Royal Academy School of Art, he received most of his artistic training from his uncle, with the result that he adopted many of Gainsborough's stylistic methods. Gainsborough painted his nephew several times, and a portrait very similar to the one presented here is conserved at the Tate, Britain. Both of these portraits, with their eyes of reflective translucence, softly rounded cheeks and chins, hint at the youth and frivolity which contemporary accounts attribute to the personality of the young man. Reference: Walter Armstrong Gainsborough and His Place in English Art, London: William Heinemann, 1898. We would like to thank Mr. Hugh Belsey for his help in cataloguing this portrait.
