Dupré, Georges (French, 1869-1909); b. St Etienne FRANCE , Cinquantenaire des Mines de Bruay [ 50th anniversary of the Bruay Mines], 1905, a silver plaque by G. Dupré, bust of H. Marmottan left, rev. rear view of miners walking right across a field towards mines in distance, edge impressed argent and cornucopia, 68 x 50mm, 101.95g (PBE 426; Müseler –; BDM VII, 239; cf . iNumis May 2015, 112; cf . DNW 45, 761). Some spotting on obverse, otherwise very fine, rare in this metal £80-£100 --- By a statute dated 29 December 1855, a concession was granted to the Compagnie des Mines de Bruay at Bruay-la-Bussière (dép. Pas-de-Calais). The business faced financial problems in the early 1860s, but was saved by its new president, Jules-Jean-Baptiste Marmottan (1829-83), the French politician. As his son Paul (1856-1932) was a civil servant and art collector who is not known to have had any direct connection with the business, is presumed that the bust on the plaque is of a family relative, who was president of the company in 1905. By the time of its 50th anniversary the mine employed over 4,500 men, 200 women and some 900 children. After nationalization in 1946, the Groupe de Bruay took over the boundaries of the mines’ former concessions ------ For more information , additional images and to bid on this lot please go to the auctioneers website, www.noonans.co.uk
