        • Thomas Goldsworthy Dutton (1820-1891) British, Lithograph of The Clipper Ship Swiftsure
          Nov. 03, 2024

Thomas Goldsworthy Dutton (1820-1891) British, Lithograph of The Clipper Ship Swiftsure

          Est: $100 - $200

Thomas Goldsworthy Dutton (1820-1891) British, Lithograph of The Clipper Ship Swiftsure.  Overall Size: 14 1/2 x 19 in.  Sight Size: 10 1/2 x 15 in.  #5060 . Thomas Goldsworthy Dutton was born in 1820 in London, and named after his father, an ironmonger. Early on he trained to be a draftsman, eventually becoming an etcher, which exposed him to numerous art styles. After marrying Martha Foster in 1843 they moved to a home in Lambeth, a London district directly adjacent to the Thames where he routinely watched various ships and smaller vessels pass. By the 1850s he had developed a reputation as being one of the finest lithographers of nautical scenes and ship portraits, practicing from premises in Fleet Street and exhibiting at the Suffolk Street Gallery from 1858 to 1879. Many of his works were done for the printing company Day & Haghe, and he specialized in naval vessels in the midst of battle, as well as clippers and yachts. His works are celebrated for their precision, technical accuracy, and artistic quality, and were highly sought after in his lifetime by shipbuilders, naval officers, and enthusiasts, serving as both artistic representations and historical records of the period’s naval architecture. His contributions have left a lasting legacy in maritime art, making him one of the most respected marine artists of the 19th Century, with the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich holding almost a complete collection of his published lithographs, a rarity among all artists and artforms. His original works, often watercolors and bright, striking oils, are usually signed “T.G. Dutton,” and fetch excellent prices at auctions for their captivating uses of lighting, movement, and composition. His influence was felt on both sides of the Atlantic, particularly in the Luminist and Hudson River Schools of painting, with many of his works in both the Royal Collection as well as the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. He passed away on March 12th, 1891 at his home in Lavender Gardens, leaving behind thousands of pieces.

DUTTON - "America" Schooner Yacht NYYC 1851

          Est: $700 - $900

London: Ackermann & Co., 7 September 1851. Tinted lithograph drawn on stone by Dutton, printed by Day & Son. Expert repairs, some facsimile in titles Sheet size: 16 1/2 x 21 1/4 inches. The great yacht whose humiliating defeat of all British rivals led to the establishment of the greatest of all yachting challenge cup races: the America's Cup. Owned by Commodore John C. Stevens and five other members of the New York Yacht Club, the America was built in New York to the revolutionary design of George Steers. Launched in May 1851, in June of the same year she sailed to challenge the English yachting establishment. After having two challenges for races turned down, Commodore Stevens entered America in the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta and under the brilliant captainship of Richard Brown (a highly skilled member of the Sandy Hook Pilots) she beat the best of the British yachts with great ease (India House Collection, p.62). The syndicate returned to New York with their prize: a trophy that was to become the America's Cup. The America herself was sold to John, Lord de Blaquiere on 1st September 1851, and six days later the present image was published. In July 1857, the original owners of the America donated their prize through a Deed of Gift to the New York Yacht Club: the deed stipulated that the cup was to be held in trust as a 'challenge' trophy to promote friendly competition. Stung by this blow to contemporary perceptions of invincible British sea power, a succession of British syndicates attempted to win back the cup, but the New York Yacht Club remained unbeaten for 25 challenges over 113 years, the longest winning streak in the history of sport. Matches were held in the vicinity of New York City from 1870 to 1920, ... From 1930 to 1983, the races were sailed off Newport, Rhode Island for the rest of the NYYCs reign. (Wikipedia).

THOMAS GOLDSWORTHY DUTTON (BRITISH, 1819-1891) The clipper 'Forfarshire' Watercolour laid on card Signed 'T.G. Dutton 1872' (lower left) 14½ x 28½in. (37 x 72.5cm.) Built in 1867 by J. Morison of Sunderland for his own account, Forfarshire was a 211ft clipper of 1238 tons with a 37ft beam. Completed in March 1867 at a cost of £17,332 she was initially used for the London-India run. Sold to the Shaw, Savill in 1873 (Shaw, Savill & Albion Line when they merged in 1883) and used thereafter as an emigrant ship to Australia and New Zealand, her fastest recorded passage was 85 days between London and Dunedin at a time when the average was 100 days. Throughout her life she had a small but permanent leak which was never found and thus she required regular pumping. In 1894 she was severely storm-damaged when outward bound for Wellington and this seems to have prompted her sale to the Argentine on her return. Thereafter she passed 'out of commercial service' and was almost certainly broken up shortly after.
