Edouard Duval-Carrié Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, Installation Artist

Edouard Duval-Carrie was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1954. He was educated at the University of Loyola Montreal, Quebec, in Canada; and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris in France. Duval- Carrie moved to Miami in 1992 and swiftly established himself as an integral factor in the city’s cultural fabric.

Thorough his career Duval-Carrié has presented many solo exhibitions, among those, in 2014 he had a major one at Perez Art Miami Museum (PAMM). His works are part of the collections of important museums and institutions such as The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan; Musee des Art Africains et Oceaniens, Paris France; Davenport Museum of Art, Davenport, Iowa; Perez Art Museum Miami, Miami, Florida; Musee de Pantheon National Haitien, Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Monterrey (MARCO), Monterrey, Mexico; among others. In 2014 he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the Consul General of France, Mr. Philippe Letrilliart.

Duval-Carrié’s work explores the social and historical aspects of Haitian culture. His imagery includes very often Voodoo gods combined with aspects of classical mythology and Haiti’s national heroes, the typical fusion that characterizes the Caribbean. His images are visual examples of Magic Realism, portraying a world in which reality and mythology come hand in hand.

Edouard Duval-Carrié (Haitian, American, b. 1950) La Voix des Sans Voix, 1999 Mixed media on canvas 60 x 60 (in); 64.5 x 64.75 x 2 (in) framed Signed and dated E. Duval-Carrié 99, lower right $5,000 - $8,000 La Voix des Sans Voix, which translates to "The Voice of the Voiceless," was completed in late 1991 following the overthrow of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in a coup d'état by the Armed Forces of Haiti. The coup was led by Army General Raoul Cédras, accompanied by Chief of National Police Michel François, both depicted on the far right side of the canvas with President Aristide on the ground. The character in the red and black striped costume likely represents the Tonton Macoute, a secret "paramilitary" police force. The Tonton Macoute were created in 1959 by dictator Papa Doc Duvalier as armed enforcers and spies to eliminate any opposition. Papa Doc Duvalier, a follower of the Vodou (voodoo) religion, sought to revive its traditions by using the Tonton Macoute, many of whom were also Vodou followers, to consolidate his power. He even claimed to be a Vodou priest himself. The name for these secret police comes from the Haitian mythological boogeyman (hence the clown suit and file-sharpened teeth) who kidnaps and punishes unruly children by snaring them in a gunny sack and carrying them off to be consumed for breakfast.

    EDOUARD DUVAL-CARRIE (Haitian. B. 1954)

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

"The Vine of Eyes". Unsigned. Oil on canvas with hand-painted resin frame by the artist. Canvas measuring 59" x 50". Overall 68 ½" x 59". (Cond: good) This piece was used as the cover of Duval-Carrie's catalog for his New York University Retrospective. Edouard Duval Carrié is a contemporary Haitian artist who was born in 1954, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and currently lives and works in Miami, Florida. He was educated at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, in Paris, France; and at the University of Loyola Montreal, in Quebec, Canada. Duval Carrié portrays a “Marvelous Reality”, as Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier defined it in the prologue for his book The Kingdom of this World, a story about Haiti that has been a strong influence on the artist. He brings into his work the nearly fantastic world of his country, in images that could be seen as illustrations of myths and legends.
