Built around 1100, the medieval castle above Saverne in what is now the French department of Bas-Rhin was built on sandstone cliffs 460 m above the valley of Zorn and the plain of Alsace. and underwent extensions and alterations at various times by the bishops of Strasbourg. In the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, the castle was razed to the ground. Date: c. 1800 Description: Ignace Duvivier, originally called Noble of Vivier, began his artistic career in Rococo Paris as a battle painter. He was a pupil and later a workshop assistant of the famous battle painter Francesco Casanova. When political events in the wake of the French Revolution made it no longer advisable for noblemen to remain in Paris, Duvivier also left France with the stream of refugees. He first went to Dresden. There Giovanni Casanova, the brother of his teacher in Paris, taught at the then flourishing academy. Date: c. 1800 Description: Ignace Duvivier, originally called Noble of Vivier, began his artistic career in Rococo Paris as a battle painter. He was a pupil and later a workshop assistant of the famous battle painter Francesco Casanova. When political events in the wake of the French Revolution made it no longer advisable for noblemen to remain in Paris, Duvivier also left France with the stream of refugees. He first went to Dresden. There Giovanni Casanova, the brother of his teacher in Paris, taught at the then flourishing academy. Later he moved to Vienna, where he lived between 1794-1824. His present work shows a view of the village of Papigno near the waterfalls of Terni, which were an attractive motif for the travelling artists of the time. Schwarz/Fichtenau "Die Anfänge der Lithographie in Österreich", Wien 1988, S. 89, eines dort Nr. 4. Ignace Duvivier lernt zunächst bei Francesco Casanova in Paris. Dem Adel entstammend flüchtet er während der Französischen Revolution nach Dresden, wo ihn der Bruder seines Lehrers Giovanni Battista Casanova weiter unterrichtet. Später siedelte er nach Wien über, wo er bis 1824 lebte, bevor er nach Frankreich zurückkehrte. Die vorliegenden Blätter, von denen nur eines bei Schwarz/Fichtenau nachgewiesen ist, sind vermutlich in den Jahren 1819-1821 in Wien entstanden, in denen er sich mit der noch jungen Technik der Lithographie auseinandersetzte und mit seinen Tierstudien einige der Inkunabeln der Lithographie in Österreich schuf. - Ausgezeichnete Drucke mit dem (wohl) vollen Rand und der originalen Bindung. Stockfleckig und teils etwas fleckig, teils minimal knittrig, leichte Gebrauchsspuren, sonst gut erhalten. Selten.
