    • Attributed to Gerardus Duyckinck I (1695-1746), formerly known as the "De Peyster Limner"

Attributed to Gerardus Duyckinck I (1695-1746), formerly known as the "De Peyster Limner"

      Est: $50,000 - $100,000

Attributed to Gerardus Duyckinck I (1695-1746), formerly known as the "De Peyster Limner" PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG BOY WITH A KING CHARLES SPANIEL This previously unknown portrait of a boy has been attributed to the early New York painter Gerardus Duyckinck. James Flexner was the first to identify a group of portraits of early New York residents, the De Peyster and Van Cortlandt families, which all seem to be painted in a similar style, as the "De Peyster manner." Then, in 1978 the art dealer Richard Love discovered a scriptural painting, which was signed "Duyckinck," which showed similarities of style to the De Peyster portraits. This led Mary Black to study the paintings and identify the artist of the De Peyster manner portraits as Gerardus Duyckinck. This attribution is generally accepted today. Gerardus was a member of a prominent family of painters in early Colonial New York City. He was the son of Gerrit (1660-1710) and cousin of Evertt III (1677-1725), and the father of Cerardus II, all painters. Gerardus was the most prolific and well-known of the family; besides the Van Cortlandts and the De Peysters, he also painted early Jewish families in New York such as the Levys and the Franks. The Crystal Bridges Museum of Art has recently acquired the six Franks portraits, which have been widely illustrated; and two of the portraits are currently on loan at the Jewish Museum in New York. Like other Colonial artists, Duyckinck relied on English mezzotint engravings for the compositions of his paintings. He used a careful glazing technique derived from Dutch painting, supplemented with a fluid, painterly brushstroke for his highlights. The stiff treatment of the body, the extended pointing finger and the pouty lips all occur again and again in his portraits. A King Charles spaniel with very similar brown and white markings appears in several portraits of the De Peyster family, which suggest that this was a family pet and not an artistic prop. It also suggests that the boy in this portrait is a member of the De Peyster family. Paintings by Gerardus Duyckinck are to be found in many museums which show the progression of American Art, including the New York Historical Society, the City Museum of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Albany Institute of History and Art, the National Gallery in Washington, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Princeton Museum of Art, the Crystal Bridges Museum and the John D. Rockefeller III collection at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. A letter from the Albany History of History and Art attributing the portrait to Gerardus Duyckinck accompanies this lot. 34 3/4 by 29 in.
