ATTR TO FRIEDEL DZUBAS ABSTRACT ACRYLIC PAINTING

          Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Friedel Dzubas, German, American, 1915 to 1994, Magna acrylic painting on canvas, Sunset, depicting an abstract expressionist composition, 1970. Signed, titled, inscribed, and dated, on the backside. Friedel Dzubas was a German born American abstract painter. Friedel Dzubas studied art in his native land before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1939 and settling in New York City. In Manhattan during the early 1950s, he shared a studio with fellow abstract painter Helen Frankenthaler. He began exhibiting his Abstract expressionist paintings at this time. His work was included in the Ninth Street Show in New York City in 1951, and in group exhibitions at the Leo Castelli gallery, the Stable Gallery, and the Tibor de Nagy Gallery among others. After the Ninth Street Show annual invitational exhibitions were held at the Stable Gallery throughout the 1950s. The poster of the second New York Painting and Sculpture Annual at The Stable Gallery in 1953, included an introduction by Clement Greenberg: In the 1960s he became associated with Color field painting and Lyrical Abstraction. He was included in Post painterly abstraction a 1964 exhibition curated by Clement Greenberg. Dzubas was a friend of Clement Greenberg, who in turn introduced him to Jackson Pollock and other artists. Dzubas used Magna paint, an acrylic paint favored by many of the artist's peers over oil paint, from 1966 onward. The artist would apply thick layers of color over washes, scrubbing the paint into the unprimed canvas. Dzubas used staining, brushing and other ways of applying color. His paintings were generally large in size and scale, but he made many very small paintings as well. One of a kind artwork.

Gallery label and stamp to reverse: Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York, New York. Provenance: Hokin Gallery, Inc., Palm Beach, Florida | Collection of Mrs. Audrey Larman, West Palm Beach, Florida. Audrey Larman's grandchildren recall her passion for art, suffusing their childhood memories: "My grandma was a lover of art in every form. She adored Picasso, Calder, Dubuffet, and others. She loved taking my brother and I to museums around the world. We would point to a painting on the wall and she would always know the name of the artist. Her homes were the perfect canvas to make her art the star. The paintings are all bold and some dramatic. As children, we would imagine that her paintings would magically come to life. Over the years, she donated significant artwork and fashion - Jean Dubuffet, Bill Blass, and others - to museums, most notably the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so others might enjoy them as well."

          Est: $78,000 - $82,000

PRE-APPROVAL BY 5 PM ET THURSDAY JULY 4 IS REQUIRED TO BID ON THIS LOT. PLEASE CONTACT CASE AUCTIONS, INC. FOR DETAILS. (865) 558-3033 or BID@CASEAUCTIONS.COM. Friedel Dzubas (American, 1915-1994), "High Pass," magna (acrylic) on canvas abstract expressionist color field painting. Signed, titled, and dated 1976 on reverse, along with M. Knoedler Gallery label. Narrow wood frame with gold metallic sheathing. 72" x 72" (182.9 cm x 182.9 cm). Frame: 73" x 73". Exhibited, M. Knoedler & Co., NY, April 9-28, 1977 (no. 3; source: the Dzubas Estate Archives). Biography: German-born artist Friedel Dzubas studied under Paul Klee in Dusseldorf and at the Prussian Academy of Fine Art before fleeing to England, and ultimately America, in 1939. Once in the U.S., he became the roommate of art critic Clement Greenberg, through whom he became associated with Abstract Expressionists Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Adolph Gottlieb and Barnett Newman; he also shared a studio with Helen Frankenthaler. In the 1960s Dzubas began experimenting with color field painting. He abandoned oil paint for Magna acrylic in 1965 when, as art historian Megan Bahr writes, he found he could achieve "with a brevity of gesture the brilliance and luminosity of oil paint applied in thin veils of color.  He could thus effect the richness and variation of traditional glazed tones using a more expressive, immediate process." The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, mounted a retrospective of Dzubas's work in 1974, as did the Museum of Fine Art, Boston the following year.  In 1983, Dzubas was honored with an exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (Sources: Dr. Patricia Lewy, "Friedel Dzubas," Skira, 2017; Megan Bahr, The Ackland Museum of Art).  PROVENANCE: The Estate of Richard J. Eskind, Nashville.

ATTR TO FRIEDEL DZUBAS ABSTRACT ACRYLIC PAINTING

          Est: $100 - $150

Attributed to Friedel Dzubas, German, American, 1915 to 1994, extra large Magna acrylic painting on canvas depicting an abstract expressionist composition, 1979. Signed, inscribed, and dated, on the backside.
